I am new to this forum, so sorry if I'm not following the rules.. however, I have a 98 A4 1.8T with a bad alternator. The Haynes manual says to remove the fan first. What wrench fits the fan nut, and what size spanner wrench does it take to hold the pulley? The A4 has 200,000 miles on it, and I am trying to get it on the road for my son. I also have a 2001 A6 2.7T that is my daily driver. Any help would be appreciated.

I went to the dealer, and they got the part off the shelf and measured it. The nut measures 46mm! I am going to try to weld up something to try to take it off as I can't find an open end wrench anywhere near that size. Thanks for the replies.

I was able to get the alternator off without taking off the fan. I unhooked the upper radiator hose from the engine, unhooked the turbo output hose, unhooked the cruise control link to the throttle body and worked it through that opening. Nice, because that nut on the fan looked rusted and stubborn.
