A6 exhaust fumes

I have a 96 A6 and I am recently experiencing a lot of exhaust fumes (from other vehicles, not mine) in the cabin while driving.  Recirculating air does not seem to improve the problem.  Any diagnoses appreciated. 

I would seriously check into an exhaust leak or similar from your car first.. if everything looks ok, then check for malfunction in the HVAC operation
