Chip On My Windshield

So I'm driving on the highway this morning and I hear a "smack!" and see a small 1 millimeter chip on my windshield. It sorta looks like a small crater and I need to get it fixed. Has anyone used the DIY kits that they sell at the auto parts shops? Or is it just better to take it to a professional and spend the $50.

Thanks!

Most insurance companies will pay for rock chip repairs.   It is a hell of a lot cheaper for them to offer that service than pay their portion of a new windshield.   Give them a call and ask, it can't hurt.

My insurance company (State Farm) covers windshields, no questions.  Definitely call your insurnace to arrange a pro repair.  Or you could leave it as-is, wait for it to crack and get a brand new windshield.

I called my insurance co. (AIS/Mercury) today and my insurance is so cheap and bare-bones that it doesn't cover windshield damage unless I pay the $500 deductable. I picked up a chip repair kit at Pepboys and the guy at the parts counter said it works. I'll let you guys how how it goes incase you're ever in the same situation.

Izzy, how was the repair kit? Two dinks here. sad sad day when it happened, damn DC beltway...learned quickly not to follow 18-wheelers too closely though.

the closer you tailgate a 18 wheeler the better gas milage you get :)

The DIY chip repair kit worked ok. I got the type with the syringe and the instructions sorta sucked. It filled it about half of the little chip and there's still a slight mark. I think its because I may have not put enough of the epoxy down. Of course I found an instruction video from the manufacturer of the repair kit on YouTube after I did the work.

Overall, it worked ok. If you're going to have a go at it, look at this video first http://youtube.com/watch?v=HWJ11D2PCPM
The kit was about $10 and having it done by a pro was $60.

I did the DIY kit and it turned out ok, but mine was more then a chip.  Mine went down to the 2nd layer and kinda turned...if that makes sense.  I didn't get enough epoxy down, or it wouldn't get down there.

I've done it before on a car w/ just a straight on chip and it filled in real well.
