castrol syntec is a GL-5 gear oil which is not recomended by the manufacturer..
audi recomends a GL-4 rated lubricant. so change that stuff out to some Redline MT90(a GL-4 75w90 grade)
Here's a link where i get mine- http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product2_10001_10002_752195_-1..
it will probably only slightly make your shifts smoother but it will help out with the longevity of your transmission
I see... I'm trying to find out differences between the GL4 and GL5 specs now. No way in hell am I changing it soon though. I figure any gear oil is going to be extremely viscous at temps below zero, so I figure the trans is normal...
If i find any big "uh oh" with the GL5 vs. GL4 then yeah, I'll change it come march but if nothing I think I'll just keep in in there. Don't get me wrong, shifts once it's warmed up are buttery smooth.

hey guys,
i have a 98 a4 1.8t, and sometimes (more in recently in the past month) that on cold days my engine would have problems starting. i would crank the starter and the car would sputter and try and turn on but won't unless i hold and crank the starter for about 15-30 seconds. i know that it is bad for the starter and it will wear out but i dont know what else to do to turn the car on. My uncles a mechanic but not specialized in audis or german cars and he said that its my spark plug or coils or the fuel injector pump. My friend who is also a mechanic (still not a german car guy) said it might be worn out cylinders and its getting by pass because the cylinders and worn and when its cold the metal constricts thus causing air to by pass instead of being pressurized to inject the fuel. i'm not really good with cars but i love them. i am taking my first auto class next quarter lol. please any help would be very appreciated. thanx

I agree and disagree that cold weather sucks. It sucks for sure for people, but for turbo cars like ours, its the best. I have a GT3071R in my B6 and have the mbc set at 23psi and when its nice and cool at..say 30 degrees...it pulls so good. Great feeling and sound, shifting and hearing that turbo spool.
Why do people whine about the weather? Especialy in the midwest! It rains, it snows, its cold, its hot and humid, and thats in a matter of days ( sometimes hours ). If you don't like it, move!

was -10 this morning here in Ames. My car starts fine, but man, if the trans is cold 1st and 2nd are HARD to get into. Once it's warmed up they're fine.
change your tranny oil and you'll love 1st and 2nd gear on cold starts again
not 100 percent true, i changed the fluid in my 5spd manual pick up and use lucas 90w gear oil and it still shifts hard into 2nd when shes cold...

My car sucks when it's cold. The car sputters and stalls until it's warmed up. I have to keep the rpms up to keep it from dying, but sometimes that doesn't work either. Once the car warms up it seems fine.. although it does still sputter every now and then. Can anyone help? I have a thread going about it here. If you've had this problem too, let's figure it out!
Here's a link to my thread.

I have to work outside

and its -28 with windchill.
damn...how does that work out for you? btw, are you from sauga, short form for MISSISSAUGA?
anyway, my car hasnt met any problems yet. The only thing i've noticed is when its cold out, my `driver information display` (DIS) is a lot more readable like its brand new.
