If it is an A6 you should probably post this on an A6 forum, as this is an A4 forum. But I believe a CVT does not come in the Quattro. The Quattro has a Tiptronic. CVT stands for Constant Velocity Transmission I believe.

I agree with captain on posting this at the A6 forum. CVT does not come with quattro cars.
CVT = continuously variable tranmission
CVT does not have gears, the transmission is made of 2 conical gears that a chain moves back and forth to change the drive ratio according to driving conditions.
They say that CVT's are much better then when they just came out but I would be cautious. My CVT has been changed once (under warranty) and if I didn't have the extended warranty I would have to shell out $8K ....

hey SrK. I noticed that you chipped your CVT. How's that working out for you?
I am on my second transmission :) but the first one was going bad before the chip...
I take it easy on the car though I don't usually drive around like a mad man, the chip is utilized only when needed and not for fun ;)

but does it make the engine sound louder? Does it affect fuel economy?

I don't see why it would make the engine loader. Maybe the blow off (although it is not really a blow off) is a little louder. Fuel economy is not different if you are taking it easy but if you push it, it will obviously consume more...
