My headlight don't switch into 'brights' mode (though the flash function - when you pull back - does work) so i plan to take the turnsignal/cruise/brights combo switch off to see if I can't find the connection problem. I figure I'll just have to bend a piece of metal(or add some additional metal) to reconnect the two bits that have dorn apart. My question is about removing the steeting wheel:
-do I have to take the wheel off to get this combo switch off?
-Is there any other way to disarm the airbag other than disconnecting the battery?
-If I must disconnect the battery, will I need to take it to Audi to have the codes erased like the manual says?(or is this just a scare tactic)
I have a cheap-o code reader, but I've been led to believe this won't be able to erase ALL the codes that will result from disconnecting the battery. Anyone know from experience about this sort of thing?

the only thing you want to make sure you have is the radio "safe" code before you disconnect your battery. This should be a 4 digit code located in your radio's user manual. I haven't touched that switch but to replace the ignition switch you need to remove the steering wheel. It's a fairly simply task so don't let that discourage you.
Just be sure to find that code first, some dealerships will charge a pretty penny to look it up for you.

make sure you wait at least 30min after you disconect the battery to make sure the reserve power for the air bags is depleated. Or you''l get it in the face....

oh ok, good to know. any ideas why the manual makes it seem like disconnecting the battery is such a serious endeavor? (it sounds like the threats of un-clearable codes are unfounded then, yeah?)

Haven't had issues disconnecting the battery but once and all of my lights turned on. Disconnected it again and cleared them.
When you reconnect the battery, you'll have to leave the key in the on-position for 3 minutes before you can start the car, so wait till your now reset clock says 12:03.

Set up a signiture with a discription of your
car (year and engine).
A buddy of mine who services the vw/audis here told me that if the cel comes on for some reason if the computer does not read this fault for three more starts then the computer will cancel the cel on its own. This has happened to me and he is correct, it did cancel. B.
