ECU Reset Question

Jestnomen mentioned in another post that if you disconnect the battery it restes the ecu. So, I was curious wether it is true that the Audi Ecu learns your driving style and drives and shifts accordingly(Tiptronic) I remeber reading on one of these posts that if you drive aggresively right from the start 0miles i guess your car would be faster. Was that totally made up and what about the break in period???

lol, um no your car won't be any faster. That's a new one to me.

i know with other cars.. that when it learns your driving style.. it just adjusts the shiftpoints slightly.. nothing more than if you were to slam on the gas.. it wouldnt do anything else.. that is about it.. if you started driving agressively now.. the car would learn no need to reset your ECU

Reseting the ECU can make a big difference but depends on the reasons for actually doing it...

for example:

I bought my A4 1.8T (150bhp) late'01 with around 50'000kms on her. The previous owner was quite an old fellow who for sure never went pass 3000rpm. So...let me get to the point lol...the car felt very tight and no where near responsive to that of other motors I have tried (1.8T 150 bhp). I have put another 5'000kms on her within a couple of months and yes the car feels better but still not good enough in my opinion. Yesterday I disconnected the battery and left her standing for just over 30 minutes NB only 15 minutes is needed to reset the ECU but I wanted to give it 30 minutes. I connected her back up, radio did not need the code as it was all working so I trotted out for a spin. Immediately she felt more responsive and I was liking a lot. Today I put around 150kms on the clock with a mix of motorway/mountain driving etc.

The outcome....the car has come alive!

If you had the car from new etc disconnecting the battery like this is pretty pointless unless you drove the car like a granny from day 1. Only if a car has been driven so slowly for such a long period (50'000kms in my case) would a ECU reset make any difference.

when tiptronics learn the drivers style.. it doesnt just keep that one style it is constantly learning and adjusting I still dont see how your ECU Reset did more than you could have by driving it that much

Yeah exactly. After ~200 miles the ECU has completly relearned itself. It doesn't save 50,000km's of data.

In general playing around with the battery does nothing...so anyone who thinks that they can gain magical power gains etc from this process can forget it, it don't work like that.

As stated in my thread above..."if" in my situation where the Audi has been driven 50'000kms in 4 years by an old geezer who never booted the engine, it is advisable to reset the ECU. Why? It reprograms the ECU to the orginal factory settings and re-aligns the throttle bodies.

My car now is how a 1.8T 150bhp should feel. In my mind it's quick enough but I know a lot of you guys are chipped so you will laugh.

A lot of people have their own theorys regarding the re-aligning of the throttle bodies, reseting the ECU etc.

Until yesterday I read from a neutral position as I had never tried this before, I never had to. But knowing how a stock 1.8T 150bhp should feel, I felt that mine was really quite dull. So..I know a mate who works for Honda and he said to disconect the battery for 30 minutes and see how she performs after. It worked a treat and I am a happy bunny.

I have searched through lots of forums with others who have gained the same results as me under the same situations...

Do you think I care whether others agree or not? Not at all, I just felt to share my good news here, thats all.

Well the ECU takes the average driving patterns every 100miles of driving. So after 50'000kms the average from that is what stays in the ECU's memory.

You are right that with the kms I have covered the ECU would adapt. It had adapted and the car felt better but I wanted to try this method of disconecting the battery.

I won't never need to do it again as now the ECU wil learn only from my driving patterns and any cob-webs from before the disconection will have been erased.

ummm well after reading this ive concluded that the guy wwwho i got the idea from had a similar wway of thinking to andya4 and if it reset every 200miles i guess that it was just a myth so thnx for the explanantion jestnomen and the rest peace
