Sending unit is screwed up. It happens a lot with these cars. There's a wire on the sender that can break, and if you fix that, you're usually OK afterward. The other situation that comes up is corroded terminals on the sending unit - clean 'em up with sandpaper and put it back together. Here's a link that should help:

wow thanks. I am new to the forum and it is amazing how much stuff you can do yourself for a fraction of dealer costs.

Yeah that's for sure. There's really very little black magic with these cars and between here, AudiWorld.com, and AudiDIY.com there's a wealth of information - with the procedures documented and proper tools, there's very little you can't do yourself on these cars. And it definitely beats paying $100/hr or more in labor charges at the dealer:)

LOL, yeah for sure. Probably wouldn't hurt to pop the gas cap first and relieve any fuel vapor pressure.

yea the lovely sending unit mine moves with the intstrument cluster's calculation of how many miles are left after it falls below 3/4s, im having this issue fixed now by the dealer it seems that this is a warraunty issue. if your car still is under warranty and dont feel like doing it take it back to them.
