Changed the fuel filter on my car after going through the earlier posts on the humming noise from the rear. Found that the fuel filter was neva replaced coz the older one had the orange sticker on it. The noise still wouldn't go. I think something is wrong with the fuel pump tooo...So planning to change it. I have a '96 A4 quattro 2.8l, 100k miles. Will this fit my car.

This is just a punt, but is there any chance that this humming noise increases/decreases along with the speed of the car?

ya..i have been observing it for sometime now......it actually is prominent at around 40-45 mph. and then increase a bit and stays the same for the rest of higher speeds.......

hey man, i think the problem may be your wheel bearings. I noticed a humming noise whenever i reached ~40mph aswell. Same exact symptoms. check it out

x2 on a wheel bearing (or any other rear end bearing) if you hear a fuel pump at that speed, it has to be mounted in your cup holder

If the noise gets louder or softer as you slightly change directions it is most likely wheel bearing.  You may want to also check the gear oil in the rear differential assuming you have quattro to make sure that isn't the problem.

going by what u just said....it's def not the wheel bearing then. The noise is uniform and well looks like i will have to look at the floowing on this issue

Fuel pump

rear differential fluid.

anything else????

a broken  spring  in the rear suspension could do that too. try this, go like 5 mph faster after you start to hear the sound, then put the car in neutral. if you still hear the sound the fuel pump is out of the picture.

Was doing 45 went the noise started  and then when to 60 and put the car in neutral and i still could hear the humming noise. So looks like the fuel pump is out of the equation.....what else can it be??? any ideas......

Sounds like wheel bearin. Put your back seat down and tell someone to listen from the back seat. to identify which side is humming.. Likely will only be one side.
