took my 99 a4 into dealer today to get oil/filter changed as it was making a slight "ticking noise". hope this gets rid of it.
they just called me and said the "oil pan gasket is leaking all around". they wanted $4 hundred-something to replace it. i told them to hold off for now. can someone please tell me what this is, how big of problem this is, and if that is a fair price/how easy/possible it would be to do myself. thanks a lot.

my car doesn't seem to be losing any oil, so does anyone think it would be a bad idea to get the APR chip put in before getting the gasket changed? i want the chip

you would notice oil leaking (whereever parked) if your gasket was leakng, Get a second option, but $400 bucks somes pretty reasonable, I think its like a 9 hr job. I had mine replace about 6 months ago. the parts are cheap - its the labor that hurts. but I would try it myself unless you have the right space and equip.
the whole front of the car has to come off, hold up wait, $400.00 buck could be right, becauce my guy said they could try and slip the gasket in, instead of taking it completly apart and doing it right. I took the latter. I replaced a few other things to as long as the car was apart. my bill was 1100 bucks.
anyways, thats my two cent. hope I can help in the future, this is my 1st post, just joined on Monday...have a great weekend everbody...
