I've read many people are using larger Mobil 1 oil filters for their 1.8's and I was wondering if the m1301 is the same filter people are using. I didn't see a listing for another filter for Audi A4's nor a much bigger filter. This model says high capacity but there is nothing to indicate there is a bigger or smaller version. Thanks.

Yeah - that's the one I use. $10 in Wal-Mart or Autozone.
I also found original Audi filters for $11.50 at the dealership retail store.
Can anyone comment on which one is better?

I have used this filter before, and have purchased another for my next oil change. The stock oem filter was on when I bought it and the guy took it to the dealer for oil changes. The only thing I am concerned about is now that I am changing my oil, if sludge develops I won't have reciepts showing my service intervals. I am running seafoam through it right now and will soon replace the valve cover gasket to further inspect the condition of my engine. No signs so far that sludge is a problem, but I want to take as much of a preventative stance as possible. How hard is it to drop the pan and inspect the filter?

Only use the Mann or Mahle oversize oil filters. You can get them at ECS tuning in bulk.
http://www.ecstuning.com/ Dropping the oil pan is a difficult job. You either lift the motor out of the car or drop the subframe and fron suspension.

Thanks Bacon. I don't plan on removing my motor or the suspension so the pan is going to stay. I saw the bulk buy on the Mann filters and will do that for the future. Are they that much bigger than the Mobil 1 filters?

M1-301 is what I am using on my car right now. That's the right "oversized" filter, compared to the Fram PH2870A that I have used on all my VWs in the past. That filter is fine for use with Mobile1 synthetic oil. I use 5W30. Don't open the valve cover and change that gasket unless it is leaking. How many miles on it?

Just about to hit 42k. It is leaking although not a serious leak. I am just trying to get as much of the 40k service stuff done right now without using the dealer for the work. The gasket is not a top priority but I will try to get it done within the next 5k miles. I know they would want to replace it if they saw it. Don't know if/when the previous owner has had the tranny flushed but any recommendations for this? It's not giving me problems and I haven't heard many negative things about Audi's auto transmissions but I just want to stay on top of maintaining it rather than fixing.

the mobil1 filter is a micron filter. Better than those cheap paper ones. Just as good as those the mahn.

Fram?! Why?!
On a VW Golf that you bought for $1,400 with 140K miles on it already, would you use synthetic oil and and a quality filter? Don't be dumb. Even with a Fram filter and Castrol 10w40 those VW Golfs (I had 2) with 1.8 engines lasted both over 250K miles.
