Hi Guys,
How often do you think I need to change the oil for the A6 Audi 2002.
Thanks,
Gajen

Depends. How hard do you drive? Are you using synthetic or dino oil?

Audi recommends two a year, but theyre smoking crack. Especially with a turbo engine running dino oil. With sythetic oil id maybe stretch it to 5k miles. I never recommend going more than 3k on a turbo motor even with synthetic oil. Look at it this way thou, if your motor blows at 70k who pays for it.

book says,
cold climate use 5w/30 semi synthetic.
moderate climate use 15w/40 - 10w40 semi
long life full synthetic 0w/30 VW spec 503.00/503.01.
hot climate 20w/40 semi.
oil classification AP/ACEA: SG/A2-96

a bit of over kill personally, min 6,000 to 10,000 on normal semi, double that on full synthetic 0w/30 that's why they call it long life

I did work for 2 oil companies, recomend synthetic 5W/30 or 0W/40, if you got turbo dont wait longer than the 8K. Redline and Amsoil are great oils, Mobile 1 is easier to find and less pricy.

the manual recommends 10,000k (for my 01 A6T) it makes no sense for audi who knows the car best to recommend 10K if that isn't sufficient. They would certainly probably benefit from saying 3-5k if it improved the reliability of their cars as well as people paying for more oil changes at the dealer. So I see no reason why they would recommend something that doesn't help them on both counts. Certainly use synthetic.

I look at it this way, change your oil at 10k miles and it will probably see no
problems through the waranty period. I also have a Grand National still running
the stock turbo at 157000 miles. Used sythetic from the first oil change(not a blend)
never went past 5000 to change. The Audi runs cleaner and I would not push it past
8000. no matter what, the oil it still gets dirty. For the most part the additive package
in the oil fails first.

All they really care about is warrenty. Outside of that it doesnt cost them a dime. As far as theyre recommendations, you may want to do a search for oil sludge. Basically they recommended to long of an oil change interval and ran into problems. It never hurts to spend the extra cash on oil changes. You can spend an extra 30 bucks here and there or the 5g for an engine down the road. Your choice.

In the UK, we use the long life oil 0W- 30. which means that teh Audi computer tells us how long the Audi can be driven without servicing. I am getting 22,000 miles between services, and there is no oil consumption after 70,000 miles. I suppose the oil companies accross the water want you guys to buy more oil to boost profits while we over here are trying to meet the kyoto emmission targets.

I switch to Amsoil products 5000 miles ago and I have noticed that my 2.8 is running better than when it was using Mobil 1. I am eager to try out the new Amsoil Ea 25000 mile oil filter. It's a little scary, but the technology is there.

Right, eh hem.... - "they only care about the warranty" I am sure that Audi (or any company for that matter) would only care about their reliability of a product during the warranty period. That way all their cars would stop running and break down at 50,000 miles and people would flock to buy them and previous customers would return every 3-4 years and drop another 40-70K on a new car that is only going to last 3-4 years. Cause the compnay doesn't care about them lasting any longer than that. Hmm...
