I wonder if Porsche doesn't have more money than sense. VW can handle a volatile global car market better than a company the size of Porsche.
Who knows though? Great fortunes are made by making stretches like this. It's just too bad that companies go seriously broke like this too. I would hate to see Porsche getting bought by Ford in 8yrs because they over extended.

Porsche would eother make it cheaper 30-40k dollar car or make ia more expensive audi.

I think it would be cool to start getting some porsche performance in audis...........but does porsche think the Audi will compete with its market base. Example cancellation of R8 type cars so not to compete with cayman or w/e their car is. Also they seem to want to buy buggatti and rolls.

+1 It would be nice to see some of porsches performance traits trickling down to Audi. They were both linked closely in the past so I say Audi would be back where it belongs. This merger can only be good for Audi's brand reputation, I just hope porsche knows what they're doing and don't go bust later down the line. Audi can finally get rid of that "VW in a tux" stigma.

and it picks up the poor man porsche stigma.

Meh. If you make a good car, then it's a good car. The name can help in marketing some, but that won't last long if the product is lousy. Ferdinand Porsche is the Chairman of VW, but no one is thinking that VWs are more like Porsches these days. That stuff is all about internal politics(both company and German) , money and may not result in the production of better cars.
I'm sure what they are looking for is what GM and others do where they produce one chassis and engine and put various brands/models on it. Big financial gains to be made there. It would be the extension of the Tourag/Cayenne thing, only spread out even more. Think how many models Nissan/Infiniti gets out of a single engine. Will Porsche elevate VW/Audi performance or will those companies just help expand the Porsche model line with shared components?

I don't think you'll see shared components between the two brands. It would be more of a testing base for porsche on something cosmetic or something. Pretty much like with the GM line-up.
One could make an arguement over the sucess of the GM brand idea. Look what has happened to Saab. Their SUV is a Trailblazer, their small sports sedan is a Subaru. Just about anything else they have that is new is on an Opel platform or has the engine. Do you think Audi will get Porsche engines, or the other way around? I highly doubt they will test cosmetic things out either. Porshe would shoot itself in the foot if it tried to use Audi styling cues. People buy these cars sometimes as much for what they look like than how they perform. Trying to blend them somehow, even slightly, would muddle them all together.
My guess is the only logical objective for such a merger would be to develop a kick-a$$ racing program. Imagine a Porsche/Audi tearing up LeMans or Daytona. They'd probably sell a few more 911's and R8's. Or, to fantasize a bit, they blend them together. Thats one amalgamation I would like to see...

i thought that the orginal inventor or porsche (w/e his name is ) invented porshce then his grandson invented Audi?? em i right at all?? anyway i doubt any american company will buy any other car company at the moment seeing how they just finished doing those buyouts

Porsche didn't invent Audi as I remember it. The two companies(Porsche and what was to become Audi) did work on at least one project together around the time of WWII. The truth is that Ferdinand Porsche(born 1875) was part of almost every single important development in early German automotive history and his heirs continued that tradition. Ferdinand worked for and consulted with many automotive companies in the early years. I don't think he worked for or with BMW - and that explains alot.
Ferdinand was the first person to put individual electric motors driving all four wheels on a car. So in that sense, he invented Quattro.

Audi and Porsche and VW have alot of influence already on reach other. Most of the Porsche parts and TSB's are shared throughout VW and Audi. The Porsche tech i work with says that most of the future Porsche models will have more shared engines. Atleast in the US because of a the emissions required by the federal government. Same goes for almost every car maker on the planet.

Both have been closely linked from the beginning. Remember the S2 had porsche brakes, suspension and engine components.

what would suck is if it did go the way of GM where it doesn't matter what name is on the car, they are all the same with small aesthetic changes. i like knowing that my car is in the same family and may have some cross technology, but looks, and acts nothing like any porsche and i would feel the same towards audi if i owned a porsche.
if the merger works to better both companies, im all for it, so long as both stay unique and separated from one another. i could see the 88 going bye bye and audi focusing on the "roomier" sport lux department and porsche loosing the cayenne being dumped so focus could be on the q7 for suv, and just get back to focusing on performance and supercars.

I hope that Porsche can stay true to itself as well and not lose its soul in the quest for cash. Time will tell.
I know that Porsche already looked into using the A8 chassis for the Panamera and decided that it wouldn't work and went a different direction. If Porsche bought Audi, I wonder if the A8 would end up on a Panamera chassis and what impact that would have on future versions of the A8/S8. Lambo engine, Porsche chassis, Audi styling - it could be a great car. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
Check out this crappy spy photo of a Panamera close to a GT3. That thing is huge!

that thing has some porsche features to it, but it reminds me of a maserati but yeah, giant compared to the 911. i just think that if that buyout is successful, that audi =4 door, porsche = 2 door. who needs a panamera when you can get an s8? and who needs a tt when you can get a cayman? just my thoughts on that.

i see where you're coming from, but lambo and bugatti, these are true super cars; porsche can already hang with them. bently is on a price hog tangent that the most optioned out s8 can't touch (dig the s8 more, but i've actually been in one so i'm bias). i just think that if the two do merge, they might as well specialize. look at the old lambo suv back in the late 80's. Jazz brought it up about a year ago, i loved that thing promoted as Rambo's Lambo, but it didn't make sense, lambourghini makes super exotics, not trucks and so it bombed. sharing technology would be/ prolly mostly is a huge benefit to all, but model specific designs will keep these cars superior to any Amer/Euro conglomorate should this merger commence. and maybe, as an after affect, vw will more resemble SEAT instead of audi. that would benefit all I think since seat looks better than the current vw design that tries to ride off of audi, but down plays so it doesn't overlap. that way, we would finally get seat exterior design in America which look more sporty.

Audi is already using Lambo engines in their lineup. They're probably using a Lambo chassis as the base for the production R8 to cut costs.

Ferdinand Piech is the Chairman of VW, not Ferdninand Porsche. Piech is the grandson of The original BIG GUY.
Ferry Porsche, also A grandson runs Porsche. It's all pretty much one big extended family.
