Really depends on what you want. You say you want more of a punch than a boom. This can normally be achieved by messing with the box. I.E. a ported box will give you more boom while a sealed one gives you more punch. I just sold my 4runner and I had 2 kicker L7 12's in it. They were nice and loud. I had a pretty good experience with them. If you're gonna be putting 300-600W into one 10 I imagine its gonna be a pretty nice one. You can never go wrong with JL's. With that much wattage you'd probably want a W6 or if you got the money up the wattage and get a W7. Ive got a buddy who has 3 W6 10's he needs to get rid of. He took two out of his truck and we were building a box to put all three in but he sold his truck before we ever got a chance to put them in. So he has one that is brand new just out of the box though. I'm sure he might part with that one.
Whatever you do you can alway trust the big names. Maybe go pick up a car audio mag and look at reviews. Or search google for something like "sub reviews" or something along those lines.

see, krule, that's what i don't want...the deep bass that resonates and makes you look foolish on the road....i want a clean, punchy bass....
ssbogger, thanks for the input...i'm pretty sure i'm gonna go with the w6...do you know if your buddy has the w6v1 or the w6v2? i might be interested if he's selling it for a good price...so you're saying the amp is less important than the sub in regards to sound quality? i'm still researching amps, but i'm not finding too many helpful reviews..

Whoever said the sub is more important than the amp is wrong... if you have sloppy power driving the sub, its going to sound like ass. If your willing to spend 700USD, you should be able to land a W6v2 and a 500/1. Spend money on wire too... if your not running a speaker amp, you'd be fine running a high quality 8 gauge. if you are going to have a 2nd amp for speakers, run 4 guage power into a distro, then 8 guage to both amps. Good RCA's make a big diff too. I run a 500/1 and a 10W7, and it is exactly what I was after... it's almost in your price range too. If I was you, i'd look for a used W7 in the HO box, and a 500/1... I bet you could get it all done for like 800 bucks, wired and everything. W7's beat the snot out of W6's.
Alpine amps are good, because they are all digital... and less $ than JL. I'd prefer JL over alpine though, if the money allowed for it.
W7:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=4950&item=5769287763&rd=1 I bought my W7 used with the HO box, and my 500/1 I got used as well... I made a point of buying CDN, so I paid more than I needed to. Since your in USA you should be able to come accross used stuff at better prices than I listed above... but still, gives you an idea. You'd be thrilled with a W7.
www.chris.offtone.com has pictures of my stereo, if you haven't seen them.

cool, thanks for the input headshok...i don't know if i want to spend the extra $$ for a w7, since the w6s are so much easier to find used...i have the bose system, so my speakers already have an amp....

i know very little about systems, being simply a hp guy, but one of my college roommates had a competition stereo car..it was a sunfire with 4 12s and and 2 3000W amps...it had 6x9s and such but they werent as outrageous as the subs...the subs and amps in the trunk created so much heat that he had to install exhaust fans in the floor of the car...the bass ruined about anything in the car that could shake loose, but his class was a stock head unit class..so when he sold the car, he Gave me one amp and 2 subs...and he installed them for me...it is an MTX amp, and MTX subs...the box was built to the exact specs suggested by MTX...so while i am biased, i am very happy with my free MTX system.

Yeah, and because you have the bose system, you'll never need to upgrade speakers... just upgrade the amp, and those bose speakers will be insanely nice. Course, if you upgraded the speaker amp, you wouldnt want to use the stock wires... I'd run 4 guage just to be safe, in case you get bit by the stereo bug again, and upgrade your speaker amp (the stock amp is looow power). And yeah, get the W6, you'll be happy... just get a 500/1, so if you come accross a w7 at a price you cant resist... you'll have an amp capable of powering it. Plus, if its just powering a 10w6... the 500/1 will never work a day in its life.

the w7 uses alot more power than the w6?
headshok2002
4/21/2005 4:33:52 PM
well a 10W7 can pull 500 watts RMS... exactly the same as a 500/1 will put out (although a 500/1 will usually bench test higher than 500 watts -- like 575 or so). I'm not sure what a W6 will draw in RMS wattage, but it wont be 500.

so headshok, are you saying a 500W amp would be somewhat of a waste if i had a w6 hooked up to it? should i go with a 400W instead, or even a 350?
headshok2002
4/21/2005 10:47:34 PM
No, because JL doesnt make a 350 or a 400, and I definatley think you should stick with JL. Their amps and subs are amazing... if you buy a used W6 in a box, you'll have enough money left over for a used 500/1. Doesnt hurt to have a little extra power... plus, if you end up with a cheap amp, you wont be happy. the JL also has RIPS technology, which adjusts ohms to make sure you have constant power, regardless of voltage -- it's pretty neat. But yeah, 500/1 is the only way to go, in my opinion. I'm not entirely biased either... I've had rockford, and own an alpine speaker amp... they definately make good stuff (although I dont like rockfords lower end PUNCH series -- POWER series all the way!)... but JL is the best bang for the buck. a 500/1, with a W6 in a box, with wiring... you should be able to do that for 700, easy.
