Yowza. CGT crash, 2 die.

LOS ANGELES -- Two people were killed Thursday in a crash at California Speedway in Fontana.

A private car club was renting the speedway at the time of the crash.

A Porsche Carrera GT crashed into a retaining wall and came to rest on the track's infield. Authorities said two people were in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene.

The second person in the car was transported by Mercy Air to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center. That person later died.

The track is home to the California 500, Nextel Cup 500, the Toyota Indy 400 and other motorsport events. The 2-mile D-shaped oval surrounds an infield portion used for road courses and a 13-turn interior test circuit.

Private parties can rent the track to turn laps.

this is very sad, we all race. its our passion and our drug. this could of easily been any one of us after reading more about it was a terrible loss to what seems to be a great competitor. ive personally lost a few friends to crashes during races but look at it this way he died doing something he loved. my best wishes go out to his family and friends.

I dont know if you can rent a car, and then take it to a racetrack... especially not a half a million dollar porsche. I think it may have been a dealership's event or something...

everyone that participates in racing, either on the street or the closed circuit...racing of any kind, should know that should there be a failure of either driver or vehicle, severe injury or death could easily be the result.

Apparently what happened in this case, is that the track let another car onto the track, while the CGT was at full tilt... it came around the bend, and in trying to avoid the slow moving vehicle (that the CGT was unaware of until now) they lost control and hit the wall.

i agree rayeedub the died doing what they loved. I would not be made if i went that way (when i am older dont want to go now) i just hope that noone else was injured when something like that happens. If i ever get a terrible disease i may do something like that if my death was imminent

Haha, I could picture that... be hard to keep a straight face as you handed over a few grand to rent a CGT for the day... knowing you fully intended to die in it. Imagine, laughing in the face of death!

Course, would be hard not to smile while renting a cgt regardless of what you had planned... that car is God.

that is sad to hear, but i just came back from Summit Point WV and i was up there the whole weekend in the 12 hour race and only 1 crash occured the whole weekend. so if you are a ROOKIE i'd say take it little bit easier on the track or dont go at all.

Yeah...a coupe of people died in this crash. There's absolutely nothing "light" about their loss of life. The driver's baby daughter will never remember her father. RIP.
