Default Turbo Timer / Timing Belt question

Hey, i just got a steal on a audi from a buddy. Who sold me a TT clean title stock. 62k miles for 3k ( audi's year = 2000)

anyway, i've been reading on the forums that i might need to replace my timing belt/waterpump. Is their anyway to check so that i can somewhat verify how much more usage i can get out of my current TB.

in addition, i wwas also curious on the need of a TURBO TIMER. (fyi most of the time i drive, i drive normally... not rough or speed racer style)
Along with the topic of the T-timer, i wanted to know: does it keep my engine running after i turn the engine off? or does it simply just let me know how long i should keep it idle before i shut the engine down?

Thx=

you have a few ks to run before the timing belt need changing 74k ish, a turbo timer is used mainly for hard driving so it doesn't need it ( it keeps the engine running a little longer to cool the turbo ) track day stuff

I used one for sure. But that's only because I got tired of sitting in the car waiting for a couple of minutes for the turbo to cool. If you run it hard in the cold just wait a minute in the car with it idling. If you run in even mildly during the summer months take the time as well. But a turbo timer for the K03 or K04 is not a main priority. I'm just OCD about the health of my turbo!

So does the TURBO TIMER, leave the engine idling after i remove the key? (maybe im not giving a good enuf explanation)

For example i go to work (about 30min drive) and im late! so i speed to work driving hard. I remove the key lock the car... And the question here is does my car keep idling and when the turbo has had enuf time it shuts off by itself??

ALso i was wondering how many of you guys have a "car starter" on your remote? (sorry dont know the name [:'(])

I KNOW ITS REALLY NEWB BUT!!! My tt is a k03 or k04? btw i forgot to add but i edited... my audi year is 2000

Yes, the car will idle with the key removed. However, my jetta would not lock with the remote with the engine running. There's a device that you buy seperate that will lock the car and roll up the windows automatically when the timer shuts off, but I will have to research the web site again. I got mine ages ago. It's really cool at the mall or whatever because people think you just left you car there cranked up with the windows open and the radio on. A minute later the car shuts off, the windows roll up, the sun roof closes, and the alarm sets the locks. It's trippy! The good part is that you route it to your emergency brake so that is some Ahole thinks hes going to steal it, the car shuts off as soon as the emergency brake is released. I'll look up those sites for you.

http://turbotimercompanion.com/ this is the device needed for the Jetta or GTi, but I'm not sure if you need one for the Audis or not.

http://www.hopupracing.com/aptuti.html this is the turbo timer that I used. hopefully i can attatch a photo of my installation so you can see how small it is. it has many features including battery voltage which came in handy for trouble shooting alternator problems.

Dude, I'm looking for it but my photobucked account is acting screwy

There is no way to gauge remaining life on the timing belt. The real problem is normally the tensioner or water pump seize, and take the belt out with it - it's not normally the belt itself that is the problem.

^^ did you know the timing belt decreases in width when old so can be calculated, I totally agree with you on the other elements and the belt is blamed for many reasons and unfounded

60,000 miles or 5 years is the recommended interval. You got the car for a cheap price, don't turn it into a $10,000 car by gambling on the TB. As McPaudiTT said, it's usually not the belt that goes, more often than not it is a problem with the tensioner. Your water pump impeller is most likely shot as well, the stock impeller is plastic and the replacements are metal. Pick up a dieselgeek kit and DIY or have a shop do it for you. The kit has all of the pieces you'll need for a complete TB replacement.

As for the Turbo Timer. If you just let the car run a 2-3 minutes after a hard run, or take it easy the last mile or two of your trip you will take care of your Turbo. My 180 has 84K on it and I have done a mix of city, highway, and track without the timer.
