B6 S4 Gas Mileage Your Oberservation.
Hey all new to the forum, and after a couple of searches i cant find any post really with someone stating clearly there gas mileage outta the v8, so im making the thread.
I just got rid of my 06 MB SLK350, as I live in the northeast, and having a rear wheel drive hardtop convertible 2 seater for over 2 years just isnt going to work anymore. So i need something with a backseat (doesnt have to be 4 doors but its whatev).
So here is breif overview of my situation. I dont want to be buy a new car again, as im buying a house and wanna try to keep my payments down on the car. I need awd for snow and what not, and i like german cars. I thought about bimmers but im not a fan of E46's and I dont want to spend the money on an e92 335xi coupe, altho they are sick. (O the car has to be manual).
So Ive always been a fan of audi and almost bought one before I saw my SLK. But it was impractical and an impulse decision, and as much as I loved it, it had to go.
EDIT: I dont want the v6, i know some people may suggest it. Reason being, I dont want a car thats sportish, and gets econoish gas mileage. Give me a fun car thats good on a gas, or a real fun car thats whatever on gas. I dont want something thats in between both and wishing a i had a little more go, or a little less at the pump. One or the other if you know what i mean.
So now im back to the audi kick, and im looking between a B6 S4 and a b7 A4 2.0t. Crazy right, I know.
Honestly i think im done with the daily sports car thing, but its hard to go away from it. But i was really focusing on gas mileage.
Im looking around on some sites and from what im getting from them is that its not that much worse than my 350. Which with 9.5 inch wide rims and Pilot PS2's i was down to about a combined average of 19-20.
So what are you guys gettin in your 4.2 s4's? On average, and what is your climate /driving habits. If it its not all to bad, maybe ill sacrifice the nicer body / int for the performance of an S4 instead?

driving a 2004 audi s4 i have not noticed a big difference in gas mileage driving in the winter and summer. i do make more trips in the winter going to the pass, which is most highway mileage. also there's a lot of construction going on here seattle, wa. my commute isn't stop and go traffic, but i don't commute on the highway to work. i average about 20mpg.
If you don't like getting shafted with mileage don't even think about the v8. I average around 13-15mpg right now depending on how I drive. And since I'm not commuting to school now that's about 90% city driving. My first tank I averaged about 10. And I just made a trip to San Diego and back(about 2 hours each way) and averaged 20-21mpg 90% highway. But hey at least it sounds nice!
grrr why couldnt they put the 2.7 in the b6's!? That would of been nice.
Alright well just due to that and and im lookin for a daily, S4 is out. Which is sad.
Looks like i may have to just a build a cheap track car to play with on weekends, and get a 4 banger.
This is going to be different.

hey so you say you dont like the B5 S4 because its "sportish" and "econoish" but hey ive got almost 350 horsepower and i get averaged 22 or 23 mpg combined and ive only paid a total of about 12000 dollars for the car and the upgrades!
but if not, and you still want an audi, go for the a3 2.0t 30mpg highway and its an audi!

Yea, keep in mind that the b5's with relatively few mods will be much faster than a b6 or b7 and will still get upwards of 20mpg. And if you find yourself wanting more there's not much you can do with the 4.2 unless you have deep pockets. If you find yourself wanting more in a b5 you can always do a turbo swap which would be a fraction of what supercharging the 4.2 would cost.
Oops you guys are way off, I meant the 3.0/3.2 V6. I know what the 2.7T is capable of, my uncle has a 2000 A6 2.7t, bought it new, has about 300whp and over 200k miles 6spd, while beatin the **** outta it the whole time.
I dont want something that old and turbo'd, Dont want to deal with the potential problems. Besides The newer interiors are awesome, and finding a sports car that is least 6+ years old that has changed hands a couple of times and not beaten or adultered with mods done by god knows who, Ill pass.
(FYI I almost bought a B5 S4 new in 2002, but oddly enough I went with an SUV because at the time I needed to Tow).
Also, it seems possible to get 250hp outta a 2.0t and especially the 1.8 with bolt ons.

Taking it hard on the streets I can pull maybe 10-11mpg.
Taking it easy on the streets I can pull up to 20 at times.
Taking it hard on the highway I can pull maybe 13-15mpg.
Taking it easy on the highway I can pull maybe 25+ (60-65mph)
