Will 18" wheels require a lowering Job on my B5?
Tonight was a big night. After finishing 4th out of a field of 794 in a poker tournament, I won over 800 bucks. I was thinking what I might do with all this green when I thought of my 2001 2.8L A4 - Silver. I was looking into some black or anthracite, whatever they call em, wheels. The dilema is should i go with 17's or 18's. I know bigger isnt always better, but I really feel like there is more of a choice of styles if I went to the 18 inchers. My question is: While I have to lower the car before or after I do this to keep the car from looking like a monster truck? Or am I paranoid about 2 inches for nothing? You know what they say, every inch counts
. Any help selecting some classy looking wheels either the stated color or hyper dark, with tires for under a grand would be great.

I wasn't happy with ride height on 17's... and I have sport pkg. 18's would have been gross, IMO. I'm picky though... Shop used, you'll get something really nice for 1K
18's will look amazing with no suspension work. 17's will need lowering because they leave too much of a gap... at least in my opinion. The problem is, I highly doubt you will be able to find a nice set of 18's PLUS tires for under a grand. I am currently in the same market and I found I am basically forced to set my limit at 2 grand. If you only have a G, you really wont have a choice but to get the 17's. If I were you, id try to win some more poker or just save up for the 18's.
I maintain that 18s will require lowering...
and you CAN find plenty of 18" wheels/tires for under a grand.

Do it whichever way you like, but 17s have a couple advantages: Tires cost less, and 17s weigh less than 18s, all else being equal, which is noticeable in every performance measurement imaginable.
Headshok is right, your best bet is to wait for some really nice used wheels to come up. Check the AZ classifieds all the time, and make your move when the price is right. If I could have my 1200 dollars back from my Fliks, I'd wait until another deal came up in the classifieds and jump on it. Only 800 bucks isn't enough for any wheel/tire combo brand new.

Here's some links to the AZ wheel/suspension classifieds, if you're interested.

The best of them all, IMO, 17x8 BBS RGR without tires. Expensive, but so beautiful and functional.
