Looking to Buy a '99 A4... New to Audi, any help?
Hello,
I'm new to this forum. I've always loved Audi's, and I believe I have found the right one. It's a one owner, 99 A4 1.8T Quattro Automatic, 108K miles, black on black, for about $8-8500 It's coming in at the end of this week. The dealership seems very good, very friendly. They encourage any potential owners to get an independent check of the vehicle before buying. I was wanting to take it to the local Audi dealer...
Any input on these cars? Is the mileage too high for this car?
I'm currently driving a 97 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer with 108K, and I just hate it. I've heard that it's not the mileage that counts, it's the maintenance, and the car itself. I could fix up my car, but I just don't like it.
I test drove 2 similar Audi A4s and loved them. When I was told that they were getting in an Auto, 1.8, all black, and Quattro, I was in shock. The only thing I'm hoping for is it to be in perfect shape. Hopefully it is.
Any help on these cars would be great. I'm doing a lot of searching on this site and others on this model year, model itself, etc., but any additional help would be appreciated. (Especially about the mileage issue). I understand that maintenance isn't going to be cheap.
. But if I wanted an inexpensive car, I'd buy Japanese.... But I love Euro cars!

Well, if u're willing to hold on with maintenance costs then u just took care of one of the major problems with audi's.
8500 seems a little bit too much for a 1.8 with +100K; i definetely think u can get cheaper than that. However you would probably have to recur to a private owner and maybe that's not a good idea, warranty wise.
Also it doesn't hurt to look at the service records; make sure the timing belt has been done (it's probably done with that mileage but you never know) along with other important things, like thermostat and water pump. That maintenance alone is over 1500+ dls. Also, check oil changes, brake fluid change and other routine services.
Mileage is not a big issue when it comes to audi's. I've seen audi's with almost 200K and still running. It's not a jap, however, and ocasionaly you have to spend some money in it, but most owners would say that a audi never lets you down on the road, as long as you take good care of it :P
Nothing else to say, really. Just do whatever you do when u're buying a car.
I totaly feel you though. No way a 97 Ford Explorer ever compares to an 1.8T a4. Audi's are so easy to drive and it feels so good, that I can't see myself driving anything else from now one (except maybe a porsche or a bentley of course :P). And modded audis (or stock S4's) aren't just fast: they smoke others and they do it with style (good luck having a modded mustang or a civic accomplishing this last part).
But, of course, that's just my opinion
Good luck on your car hunt!

The person ahead of me is right... Audis are way fun to drive and in alot of ways good bang for the bucks. But its that part about the bucks that well...sucks. Maintenance and repairs are generally expensive unless you either have the $$ to afford an extended warranty or you find a really great mechanic thats reasonable. At 109k miles the warranty thing may be hard pressed. On the lighter side they are good cars, quattro drive kicks *** and Its easy to scare yourself in turns. Just do all the buyer beware things first, like having it checked out is a good idea. Good luck for you!!!!!!!!!!!!!
