Default stock 06 STI vs. stock 01 S4

Alright, so yesterday in the way to class I am on the phone minding my own business on a two lane road going through the orange groves on backstreets.

I am a pretty observant driver, I see that there is a Mitsu 3000 gt way back.

The next time I look up all I see is a huge carbon fiber hood scoop, some guy in a Subaru is on my ***, I can see the huge wing through his windows, I speed up a little and see the sti fog light covers.

I owned a Subaru, I am still and avid Subaru enthusiast, I almost got a STI, I got a Honda S2000 instead which I traded in for my S4.

About a mile ahead I know that there is a stoplight and the road goes from one lane each direction to two lanes in each direction. As far as I know the black sti behind me has a carbon fiber hood and maybe other mods, I have no idea, I don't remember seeing this car at school before, but a lot of people go there so who knows.

I decide not to drop it until we get to the light. Oh after the light the road climbs a pretty steep hill and has a few sweeping turns, the speed limit is 50 and there is about a mile and half until I have to make a left into the school entrance.

As we approach the light I smoothly shift from 4th to 3rd and am about 40 mph and I dunno 2500-3000 rpm would be my guess. I see that the sti slows dramatically kind of jerk and then start to accelerate, my guess is he also went to third but he increased his following distance so that he could accelerate before we got to the light and basically sling shot past me. I saw it coming and dropped it a little earlier.

He shoots up on my right, we both punch it, dead even through third, I pull all the way to about 6500, he shifts maybe a second before me and I pull a half of a hood, I shift to 4th really well and pull another foot or two, we go around a sweeping right, I am on the outside radius so he gains a few feet back because I have to travel a longer distance, but a sweeping left is coming up, so I gain it right back, now we are over 100 and I decide not to shift to 5th, I pulled enough, we are basically even in third and I know my gearing is made for the autobahn so I will slowly pull. I slowed he passed cool guy no flash and I see him turn into the school entrance, I wanted to follow and talk to see if he had any mods, but I was late for class.

Wait not over yet, I go to class and I come out and I am walking down a stair case that overlooks the parking lot and I see the black sti pull into the parking lot and what are the odds, he parks right next to my car. I hurry up because I don't want to miss him.

So as I get there he gets out, I notice the exhaust is stock, and he is a guy about my age (early 20's)
he's pretty cool we talk , he said he used to have an S4, I half believed it, he said he had a lot o problems and sold it, from what he knew about his sti and the s4 it sounds like he just had someone else work on it and he basically just wrote them a check and really know nothing of the workings of the car. Anyway he said it was stock except for the hood. We talked about Subaru tuning, and then the race, he said that he didn't realize I wanted to race until I was like pulling on him, which is BS because he wouldn't have tried to sling shot around me and drive 80 in a 50 for no reason, he was just trying to justify how a heavier car with less hp and torque could keep up with him. Well the S4 is geared for top speed, the sti is not, the sti stock really revs out fast (no point in going past 5500 if you haven't done an air box and intercooler hose mod) and I was ready for him because I was in the right gear and had built boost at the same time he did, plus we have A LOT more torque down low and a A LOT less turbo lag, I drove an sti, it's like the car has an on off switch below 3000 rpm.

anyway it was a good race and I was kinda surprised how close it was I would have thought he would have pulled me pretty easy...

He shoots up on my right, we both punch it, dead even through third, I pull all the way to about 6500,
So he gets a running start on you from behind, (a faster car keep in mind...unless your car somehow came from the factory with ko4's and rs4 tuning), and you punch it and start pulling him by the top of the gear you are currently in, that means that you would have taken him no problem....and a stock sti with an average driver runs about a 13.3 at about 100mph, give or take a little. A stock s4 runs a 14.1 at about 98mph. So, at best, you would be about the same speed as the sti in the top of third. But if he is already shooting up on your right, and pulling you, there is no way you would able to punch it and hang right with him unless you were faster.....and if both were stock, then the only excuse is that, like i said the other driver must be a dumbass, no offense to you whatsoever. I love s4's, they are nice cars. I have a friend with an awe stg III+ s4 that just dynoed 427whp on the 100oct program, and I know they can be made very fast. Im just saying that stock they are not really anything to brag about, and that it your story is very doubtful, considering that you were able to pull on him through one gear after he was already slingshotting by you.

i think you misunderstood, hhe punched it from about three car lengths behind me, I punched it at the same time, i was already in third and spooled when he was downshifting so i had the jump, he did catch right up and yes his car was probably faster, but the circumstances of me anticipating his actions gave me the advantage. And what is a two mph difference when these cars have different gearing? remember the S4 was made to cruise the autobahn and the STI was made to rally one is high speed and one is low speed (reletively speaking)

ok, I misunderstood. then cool. You should look into getting your car chipped. Then you could have let the sti catch you and then hit it. It is all the difference in the world. I remember when my friend got his chip and it was a huge difference. And for only like 500 bucks.
