You won't legally be able to sell the car to anyone down the road. And if you did, and they were in an accident, they could sure the livin' **** out of you.... I'd just leave them in the car, and they are there to save lives, even though it hurts like hell getting hit with one.

Take them out if you want an airbag light will come on. You do not legally need them for any thing. For liability reason most shops won't do it.
but I'll still think its retarded if you take them out

is this a legal requirement in the states?? I mean when you sell the car how do you prove they work or not ( crash it )
in the UK its not a legal requirement but seen many crashed cars where they didn't deploy and deaths so I wonder where the law stands with this
