I have a 1999 A6 that every time I fill the tank, the car wont start, jerks and stalls. Eventually the car starts and this does not happened until the next gas station visit.

 

I had a '99 A4 that did the same thing and eventually the check engine light came on. I took it in to the dealer and it ended up being the gas cap seal. They explained that the tank pressurizes itself and this seal needs ot be airtight. The seal is $1.50 but I spent over $100 diagnosing it.[:'(] Chane this seal before your next fillup and see if the problem still exists.

 

I had similar problem on a 1999 A6 - turned out to be the engine temperature sensor. Changed this and it worked fine.

 

check for fault codes it could be many things from the seal on the gas cap to the canister purge valve EVAP system

 

Could it be a fuel pump starting to go?

 

This happens to me too, at the gas pump and anytime I turn off the car and try to restart it within a few minutes it hesitates and has a hard time starting. It has never failed to start, and the gas pump is the only time it does it 100% of the time.

 

I'm telling you guys...ITS THE CAP GASKET...$1.50 part = no more hesitation at startup. Retards had my car for a full day to figure it out. [:'(]

 

I agree to a point but the codes would be nice the EVAP system is complicated and the gas cap is part of it

 

This is true....VAGCOM would shed some more light, but $1.50 is a quick fix and if the problem stops well then you saved some $$. VAGCOM would be the second step no doubt about it.

 

BUT the code wont be cleared it will be stored as a soft error, check for fault codes, VAG is the best if you drive an Audi all the time
