Default Speaking of OIL...whats the concensus?

After reading the annoucement about ROYAL PURPLE 5w-40, just wanted to get an idea of what most of youare using, (those of you that do your own changes).

I've stuck with the dealer recommended VW oil, but I'm sure theres better out there.

Lets hear the pros and cons....if you please....

I would stick with the VW recomended oils. They are specially formulated for the VW engines for their longlife servicing intervals, no point taking chances experimenting with different oils that are not VW 'accredited'.

The only real way to tell how an oil is holding up is to do an oil analysis. The dealer intervals may be fine for you, but for cars that take short trips the "VW" recommended oils won't do jack if the car isn't up to temp for a long life service.

VW accredited? Give me a break...

So lets go for some other oils that are not accredited by VW! Whether on a longlife or fixed service interval, there is no reason not to use oils specified by VW for each particular program. If you are trying to look after your car, why not stick to the manufcaturers reccomendatio...

My manual has a list of recomended oils from many manufacturers, not just VW. I assume it is OK to use any of these oils.

Which manual is that? The A3 user manual lists the VW specifications (i.e. 502 00 etc.) for oil for the different types of engines and service intervals.

There are many differentoils that meet the 502.00 standard. Just make sure that whatever brand you use that it meets VW's recommendation.

OK, sorry I took the spcification and looked up all the oils that meet it, and made a long list of oils that I can use.
