Default A6 remotes from Ebay

I've got an '02 A6 4.2 and need another remote. My orig remoteis 4DO837231E. The most common remotes they sell on eBay are 4DO837231M.Has anyone used these with success? Or do I have to get the exact number?

Thanks,
J.E.T.

I have an E as well and I bought a P from the classifieds here and it works just fine. So I feel it is safe to assume P's and E's are interchangeable.

You have to pry off the back cover where the batteries are to see the numbers.

I originally purchased some from eBay that had a different letter and couldn't get them to work, so my second time around I bought one that matched exactly and I was able to code it to open and close the doors no problem.

The dealer cut the keys for me for free, so the only thing I can't do is start the car....it would seem the immobilizer doesn't function properly.

Anyone know if this is easily resolved via a dealer or if they will require me to sell a kidney to pay for it? Are there other options such as VAG-COM? I would much rather purchase a VAG-COM if I thought I could handle this myself rather than pay just as much to the dealer to have them do it for me.

From what I've gathered at this site, the keyfob with an immobilizer chip needs to be programmed at the dealer. I' ve read some vague posts that Vag-com can do it, but no confirmation.

I'm hoping some old members will chime in.

The VAG COM can do it, but you have to be a certified technician with a secret code to send over the internet just to program the keys, so the answer is you have to go to the dealer to get them programmed.
If you have immobilizer that is. 03 and up.

Im a locksmith and can cut and program most of the Audi and VW up to 04.
There is a system set up so aftermarket can program all the models but its
to costly right now. most of the remotes are onboard programing but
you do need 2 keys.

You only need one key to program immobilizer, and no you can't program immobilizer if you don't have a code from germany so your full of crap. If youARE managing to program immobilizer keys audi is gonna have a field day with you if they find out.
