Default Hey ALL! New to the site

Hey Guys I have a '99 Camaro SS and am definitely thinking about trading it in for an S4, just wanted to know some things about them regarding durability/reliability...I'm trying to choose between an S4, Acura, or Lexus, any info would be a big help..
-Thanks, Joe

Are you thinking of the V8 or 2.7t engine?

The newer model has all the benefits of a new car, but the 2.7t in the B5 model is a great buy and can be modded to some extremes.

I was looking at anywhere from a 2000 to a 2002...are there years that are better than others? I don't like how the new ones have a V8 I'm trying to get away from that and as far as mods I might do a little but I'm not really looking to race it

I was looking at anywhere from a 2000 to a 2002...are there years that are better than others? I don't like how the new ones have a V8 I'm trying to get away from that and as far as mods I might do a little but I'm not really looking to race it
Exactly how I felt, but it was so tempting. I was like a kid in a candy store! I'm not saying you won't be able to resist the "dark side", but there's a lot of satisfaction with modding, too. It's all about your budget with the 2.7t engine.

The 2K through 2K2 years were all 2.7t cars. The following is the most unbiased info I can disclose:

2000 S4 has and has nots:
Has (smaller) classic S4 badge.
Has an f-hose.
Has the Bosch MAF that may fail over time (Audi recall: newer Hitachi unit fixed this problem).
Has the A box ECU for manual 6 speed (considered to be the most aggressive of all the ECU boxes).
Does NOT have ESP.
Does NOT have larger turbo oil lines of the 2002.

2001 S4 has and has nots:
Has (smaller) classic S4 badge.
Has an f-hose.
Has the Hitachi MAF.
Has ESP.

2001.5 S4 has and has nots:
Has (larger "S") new S4 badge.
Does NOT have an f-hose.
Has the Hitachi MAF.
Has ESP.
Note S4 Avant arrived at this point, too.

2002 S4 has and has nots:
Has (larger "S") new S4 badge.
Does NOT have an f-hose.
Has the Hitachi MAF.
Has ESP.
Has larger turbo oil lines.
ECU box is considered most sophisticated than all others before (except 2000 A box is strongest in performance).
Also....

2001's come with an ESP switch and a low oil level sensor.
It's not listed, but 2000's are 85 lbs lighter.

Available options on the 2001's were:
1)New "Alcantara" sports seats with suede inserts.
2)Aluminum side mirrior housings(only available for alcantata interior with aluminum beltline trim).
3)Navigation system.

I think that's it.

Woooops!!!!!

I cut and pasted the old version. Here's the correct version:

2000 S4:
Has (smaller) classic S4 badge.
Has an f-hose.
Has the larger Bosch MAF that may fail over time (Audi recall: newer Hitachi unit fixed this problem).
Has the A box ECU for manual 6 speed (considered to be the most aggressive of all the

ECU boxes).
Does NOT have ESP.
Does NOT have larger turbo oil lines of the 2002.

2001 S4:
Has (smaller) classic S4 badge.
Has an f-hose.
Has the Hitachi MAF.
Has ESP.
Has low oil level sensor.

Options that became available in 2001:
1)New "Alcantara" sports seats with suede inserts.
2)Aluminum side mirrior housings(only available for alcantata interior with aluminum beltline trim).
3)Navigation system.

2001.5 S4:
Has (larger "S") new S4 badge.
Does NOT have an f-hose.
Has the Hitachi MAF.
Has ESP.
Has low oil level sensor.
Inlet Manifold revised
Turbo specs revised.
Note S4 Avant arrived at this point, too.

2002 S4:
Has (larger "S") new S4 badge.
Does NOT have an f-hose.
Has the Hitachi MAF.
Has ESP.
Has low oil level sensor.
Has larger turbo oil lines.
ECU box is considered most sophisticated than all others before (except 2000 A box is strongest in performance).

The tires on the US cars were different between model years. They evolved from Bridgestones to Pirellis to Michelins.

Yes, the 2001.5 and 2002 cars were the most sophisticated models with their revised turbo blades and the oil lines became a bit more efficient, but somehow the 2000 cars seem to be faster on the track; evidence points to the A box ecu.

Hmm...I really want those seats too, so I should get a 2001 or newer, plus the hitachi and the navi, now I'm seeing these all day long for 23-26k w/ 30-45k miles on them...is this good? typically how many miles can you put on the S4 before you have major maintenance...Also, I really don't like the 3 year 50k mile warranty especially for a German car but oh well

The biggest bill will come when the timing belt needs to be replaced; they usually last until 75K miles (some have needed to be replaced as early as 60K while others have gone until 90K).

The cost = $1200 to $1500 for parts and labor.

Bear in mind:
You won't get any wood interior with the Alcantara seats.
The Bosch unit was replaced with the Hitachi unit through a recall recently.
The Nav system on those model years leaves alot to be desired; if you are used to Nav, you may be disappointed with the S4 version.

Your price quotes are OK, but there have been better deals seen occasionally.

When checking the car out, inquire about control arms and tie rods or at least have them checked. Audis are notorious for those weak areas.

Right On Man, what do you drive? How do you like it? If you could do it over again would you get a Lexus or an acura or even a BMW over the Audi?
