just got 99 A6 avant
Nice wagon, my first import We make up reasons to go somwhere we are obsessed with the handling and performance of this fun Station wagon!!! I'm not a gear head so can someone explain why the oil guage is by temp and not pressure. and whats the deal with 5 valves per cylinder? Will this be a costly repair in the future?</P>

Im assuming youve got the 1.8T which if your turbo gets hot youl notice a oil temp spike Id guess its to keep you from raosting sothing but then again the six bangers got them to so Im not sure. I just chalk it up to german engineering who knows what goes on in there heads.</P>
yeah it is a kind of costly repair make sure if your timing belt hasnt been changed yet to change it before the recomended time. I believe originaly it was 90K for my 97 then they changed it to 60K</P>
5 valves per cylinder means better compression and better valve exhaust. The motor is more efficient. A very good design that has given the 1.8t many awards.
Because the 1.8t is a 4 cyl turbo motor you should be more concerned with oil temp instead of pressure because when you run the turbo hard, the oil will definitely get REALLY HOT. On a smaller 1.8T motor where it is normal for the the pressure to get very high - an oil pressure gauge will not really tell you much.

sorry i forgot to mention it is a 2.8 V6 I'll have to check to see if it is turbo (wife has the car now) I'm sure it is not since there is a 2.7T also. Thanks for the input</P>
I have a 99 A6 Anant aswell with the 2.8. Do they really have the 1.8T motor in that car? I know that some of what the last reply's were true regarding the 5 valves, but the 1.8t is new to me. FYI...I too love my A6. Just put a set of OE chrome 17" off a 02 A4...really makes the car look aggressive.
LOL
i dont think 1.8T comes in A6, sorry SlimChriz and brrman
and in 1999 A6 only came with a 90 degree 2.8 V6 <img border="0" src=smileys/smiley1.gif border="0"> <edited><editID>Firestarter1984</editID><editDate>38051.7478587963</editDate></edited>

thats right firestarter. does anyone have comments about the synthetic oil amsoil. my mechanic is recommending this on the next oil change. I think the transmission of the 99 A6 is a synthetic Why wouldn't the motor oil work as well?
Amsoil engine oil is top of the line. Can't get much better than that - Royal Purple maybe.
You don't really need to spend so much $$$ for good synthetic oil though. Mobil1 synth is very good oil (best of the typicals) and much cheaper than Amsoil. But if you don't mind spending the money, you can't really go wrong with Amsoil.
