new to the forum...couldn't find archived post addressing this problem...please help...all you Audi studs out there must have run across this before...bought non-running '87 4000CS (in great shape) can't get it started. No fire, no fuel. Held coil wire out near ground, cranked motor, no spark. Removed fuel line from cold start injector, cranked motor, no fuel. Checked all fuses, all ok. Car has over 137k on the clock, fuel filter looks original (yuk) will replace it, might solve that. I notice from the wiring diagrams that battery power doesn't go directly to coil, but through ignition module first. Could anyone please direct me to an ignition "decision tree", you know, try "A", if no, try "B", if yes try "C"? Bought a Haynes manual, which is only useful as kindling in a fireplace...

If no spark and no fuel the problem might be with the ignition switch, wiring or fusible link, etc. The fuel pump you can jump at the relay but if the ignition is not firing you will have to do troubleshoot using a wiring diagram and a voltmeter. If the car is an automatic it might be the start inhibitor relay/switch at the gear selector. I had a similar problem on my '84 4000S. The gear selector had a switch that over the years got caked with hardened grease and dirt.

Forget about the start inhibitor relay/switch as I have mentioned before, it blocks the starter only and this is not the case with your car. It has to be something with the ignition switch/wiring.
