Shifter movement on all gears?
My 2001 S4 has 82k miles on it, I got it over a month ago with 80.5k. I noticed the shifter moves slightly (about half an inch) on any gear whenever I press or release the gas pedal. Is this normal, or could it be an indication of the tranny nearing the end of its life?
The only other thing I notice is sometimes while cruising if I let go of the gas, when I hit the gas again (even gently) I'll feel like a clunk, not too harsh and you can barely hear it (if you even do hear it).
There's a post someone else made regarding the second issue, here: https://www.audiforums.com/m_25318/tm.htm
Thanks for any insight!

That does not sound right, at all. A little movement in normal, at least as far as I'm concerend, with the engaging of acceleration or deceleration but, that's not what you're describing. Check it out right away man, before any more damage may be caused.
I'll schedule an appointment in the next 2 weeks (can't afford to be without a car at the moment, my fiancee drives the SVX daily and our work schedules are very different).
Anyone else have any ideas/input as to what may cause this? Would the clutch have anything to do with it?
I have an extended warranty so I'm hoping it's covered.

I had very similar symptoms when I first bought my 2000 S4 with 40K on it. I took it in to the dealer to have it checked out, and they found nothing wrong with it. I was still not happy with it, but this did the trick for me:

Almost no movement in the shifter now, and the on-off throttle behavior is radically improved.
We must have similar taste in cars, as I also have a 92 SVX (but only occasionally let my fiancee drive it).
That also helps explain the transmission paranoia...

I actually thought about it over the weekend and after doing a few tests realized it was very likely excessive torsional movement... And this information confirms my theory. $350 is a little high for what it is, but at the same time I think it's a great investment in the longrun. I can't think this issue is good for the drivetrain's health, and minimizing it will definitely contribute to a longer lifespan.
As for the SVX, I just wish Subuaru had spent the time to develop a strong enough manual transmission for it at the time. It's a shame the car's amazingly smooth powerband has to go to waste with a tall ratio 4 gears automatic. Other than that, it's an amazing machine, although quite high maintenance. The verison of the 4EAT in it, along with the AWD system developed for it, was way ahead of its time.
Thanks once again for the information above. I'll probably order one here in a couple of weeks (around the time I was planning on taking the car in).

If you haven't already, you might want to check out this site. Easily the best SVX owner's resource on the internet:

You will find that a lot of people have taken the 5-speed issue into their own hands and swapped in the Impreza/Legacy manual tranny when their originals died. It is a pretty straightforward swap once you get past the issue of fabricating a clutch pedal assembly, but there are kits available now to make the whole job pretty easy. I've driven one, and the lighter weight and closer ratios make it a much quicker car than it is now. If you need more, there is also an aftermarket supercharger kit available now
There is at least one SVX out there with an STI 6-speed in it as well.
The S4 will obviously crush the SVX in pretty much any performance category (except maybe top speed), but I must admit that the SVX is a more comfortable car for covering long distances at high speed.
I hope the stabilizer fixes your issue like it did mine. It is a beautiful piece of hardware to boot; sad it has to live out of sight under the car.

I actually posted my SVX for sale a few weeks ago.
The S4's top speed can reach 160 MPH stock without the speed governor. I believe the '92 SVX LS-L tops out at around 148 MPH (some sources claim 155 MPH, which is doable considering it has a very low CD [.29]).
