Burning oil like its water
Helo, I have a 2006 A3 2.0 with 38,000 miles and I have to put a just about 2 quarts of oil in it every 5000 miles. This cant be normal. I understand that it is a turbo, but is there something I should look into. The stealer says its a turbo so it will burn that much oil. Please advise

2 quarts in 5000 miles seems pretty typical for this engine. That's about what I'm using at 45K, and it has been pretty consistent for the 20,000 miles I've put on this car. There are also some who don't use any oil, and others that are using a quart every 1000 miles.

I know that oil burning is a much discussed issue with the 2.0T engines. However, I do not think it is normal. 1) If that amount of oil consumption is normal for the engine, I seriously doubt it would pass emission tests. (Opinion...pls shed wisdom on my beliefs! )
2) I have a 2008 TT with the 2.0 and with 7500 km on the clock, I changed my oil that had last been changed at 1000km. The oil level had BARELY moved if at all. Plus the tips of my exhaust are still fairly clean. So my car burns virtually none. Other engines, same specs, burn oil as though they are a diesel...strange world
On the other hand, however, as long as you remember to keep adding the oil, there are no major problems. Still an odd issue to have on such a great engine that is in such widespread use.

are your tailpipes very black and dirty from burned oil? cause this might be why you are burning more then you think

(scroll down a few posts and read what that audi tech said about it)
i had my intake flap motor fixed replaced because it was stuck open and i have noticed since the repair less oil usage.

I stopped taking my A3 to the dealer. But my German vehicle specialist mechanic said the same exact thing, the car RPM's very high and its a Turbo, so the burning of the engine oil is common. He said to check the oil every 1000 miles or so.
I also was very annoyed when this first happened to my A3, it was only about 2 months since I had the car. I had the MIN OIL light come on while I was driving home from work on the highway. I immediately got concerned and took it to my mechanic, he checked the dip stick and there was no oil at all, perhaps just a little drop of it, on the very edge of the MIN marker. He quickly became upset with me and started yelling in Italian, telling me this car is not for me, and I should have known better, and to check my oil every 1000 miles on these type of cars.
Anyway, my A3 needed about 1 quart and 1/2 and he said to religiously make it a habit to check the oil on this vehicle.

yeah i got a check engine light it came on and then away usually i would come on after high revs, then because of another problem it stayed on so i brought it in and they said that it needed to be replaced along with the other problem, apparently its a common problem so they took it out and put a newer version of the part and updated the computer as well. since then i have noticed normal oil usage and no more blacked out tailpipes.
