Did an oil change this weekend for 10000 miles since the dealership doesn't cover that one AND they want to charge $130 for it.

For DIY the total comes out to:

The oil change process is easy as well.
[ul][*] 1) remove engine splash guard with T-25[*] 2) Remove drain plug with 19mm socket[*] 3) Locate filter housing and remove a cap located on the bottom of the filter housing.[*] 4) Depress the bleeder valve with a screw driver or using the audi tool[*] 5) Remove oil filter housing with 36mm socket[*] 6) Replace filter and o-ring[*] 7) Put everything back together.[*] 8) Pocket the $80

Don't you need a special tool that drains the oil completely? Some sort of a pump?

If not, can you do it for me when I hit 10K (in 4 months)? We can go boozing on the $80 saved.

 

i'm 500 miles away from my 10k. I'm down for the boozing..

 

I have the tool on order but you can use the a blunt tool to force the valve open. I dont mind doing the oil change either, but you'll have to supply your own catch can and dump the oil yourself.

 

how necessary is that 10k change though if u don't drive hard on it often?

 

I would change oil every 5k, especially since we have turboed cars. Changing oil every 10k seems a bit unrealistic, especially for synthethic.

I'm chipped and drive hard as well and $50 is worth the peace of mind. I also love spending some quality time underneath my car.

I take almost the same course:
Purchase a 5 pack of filters $47.95 and five 5 ltr jugs of 5w-40 Pentosin (5x$29.95=$149.75) from ECS Tuning + Shipping ($26.48) = $44.84 per oil change.
Take one filter, ECS magnetic drain plug and crush washer and one jug of oil to Jiffy Lube.
Pay them $20.00 and they vacuum the car, top off windshield washer fluid and I tell them not to touch anything else.
Read newspaper for 30 minutes.
Leave.

They deal with the belly pan, waste oil, time under the car AND keep very good records should you ever need them.
They were really good about buying me two new belly pans for my B5 Passat when they didn't get them back on correctly.
So, Jiffy Lube $20.00 + $44.84 parts = 64.84 from $130.00 = $65.16 in savings, but no muss, fuss or oil disposal and no tool required.

Most shops will do the labor for $15-20 if you supply the parts.

 

I trust A3Night more than your average jiffy lube staff.

I have access to a lift (and oil disposal), albeit in the City of Industry (where my mechanic friend's shop is located), 40 miles away from Irvine where A3Night and I live. A3Night, will you help me out when I hit 10K miles in 2 to 2.5 months? Thanks! In the future you can also do your oil change there so you don't need to crawl underneath your car or worry about the bucket of oil in your garage.

 

I'm in the every 5km club too! Just got my car back today from an oil change and enjoying the fresh smooth feel of the engine. I had them do the first oil change at 1K on the recommendation of a friend. A tip for breaking in a new engine. All the bits in the engine wear off and get trapped in the oil...bits you may not want floating around in the engine for the first 5k (or 8k if you follow audi oil change sched).

I admire the do-it yourselfers. I use to change the oil on my 84GTI...quite simple. The new engines seemed daunting to me...from the sounds of it, also quite simple. Unfortunately, I now lack the facilities for such task.

The extra costs do add up at 140CAD$ a pop but, just like A3 night said it "is worth peace of mind" ! and goes along way in protecting your investment.

I have 25k on mine and looking forward to many more oil changes...every 5km :-) Thankfully I can write off the extra maintenance costs.
