Oil change in manual gearshift
Hello, I wonder if somebody had done the oil change in their manual transmission fearshift. My model is A3 Sportback 1.9 TDI 2005., and it has gone 120000 km, my service adviser told me that oil in gearshift should endure a life time of a car and shouldnt be changed. But after 120000 km changes are sometimes "dry", and I would like to change it, any advice, can it hurt the gearbox?

I've changed it in my 2007 2.0t and it was pretty simple. Make sure you get the vw/audi approved gear oil. I did it around 70k (miles not km) and it felt much smoother afterwards. I'm also not a believer in that lifetime fluid stuff (and I think that only applies to the automatic transmissions anyways) therefore I would recommend changing it.
If you go to the bigger online stores for Audi's they- usually give you a kit that makes it easier to change everything others only give you the fluid and you are on your own.
Good luck!

I generally change the tranny and diffy fluids every 60k miles (90k km) in all my manual transmission vehicles (two Audis and my Crossfire). Now that there is no timing belt, I have to figure out when to do the coolant (probably the same interval, since my annual mileage is less). Then I also do the brake fluid roughly every 5 years.

Brake fluid every 5 years is kind of pushing it - at least if you look at recommended changes/flushed. VW/Audi states every 2 years which is probably overkill but 5 is more than double. I'd wouldn't go past 3 years to be on the safe side.
On the transmission fluid however I agree that I would look into that every ~60k or so

If I was Audi (or any mfr), I would push for more frequent brake fluid changes for liability reasons. But unless you are racing the vehicle which pushes the fluid temperature, or live in the humid tropics, DOT4 is pretty good stuff and the DOT5 syn is even better. Having said all that, when I was driving my A6 20-30k/year I changed the fluid every three. Now that my mileage is way down with my A4, I am probably on a 5-year plan. In fact, my two 2005 Crossfires (2003 SLK 320s under the skin) will have coolant and brake fluid flushed for the first time this year. Does that make me a bad owner? Maybe.
