1997 A4 1.8T Quattro rough idle problem

RE: 1997 A4 1.8T Quattro rough idle problem
Heres a test for the ICM and wiring.

If you are swapping couils, and they are good in the other cylinder, then either your icm is bad, or the ecu is really f-ed up.
Good luck!

i agree. it looks like the icm from what you have said. the test is simple and effective. had similar stuff going on. tested the icm-showed bad-replaced it-now everything is fine.

Thanks for the input. I'm checking out some ecu's on ebay motors and found a usedone for a good price. It is the 8D0907557P unit. That should work in my car right? I'm going to try the ICU test tonight to test my old Huco one and my new Bosch one. I'll need to be sure it's not the ICU, and if not, I think it's most likely a messed up ECU. Even if the ECU isn't the problem, it'd be good to have an extra one to maybe get chipped in the future. If I get a new ECU and it's still misfiring, then I'll probably get new coils. Sounds likea good course of action to me

RE: 1997 A4 1.8T Quattro rough idle problem
Haven't posted in a long time cuz it took so damn long for my new ECU to be delivered. I got a used ECU off ebay motors, part # 8D0 907 557 P. Plugged it in and ran vag-com. This time vag-com displays the same part number as the label, so thats good. Had to recode it from 06051 (front-wheel drive) to 06251 (all-wheel drive) since my car's a quattro. Once I did that I ran the throttle body adaptation. At first it gave me an error and I checked the fault codes and it said something like throttle-body error, I don't remember exactly. I cleared that and ran the throttle body adaptation again and it worked fine. I started the car and it was idling rough, so I let it idle for a few minutes so the ECU "learning process" could be completed. I decided to take it for a spin, drove for about 10 mins on the highway and 10 mins on arterial streets. Power seemed weaker than it used to be, but ok, and it didn't seem to idle as rough. The check engine light never came on. Once I got back I kept the engine idling and plugged in vag-com again and checked the engine fault codes. Got these codes:
Control Module Part Number: 8D0 907 557 P
Component and/or Version: 1.8L R4/5VT MOTR AT D04
Software Coding: 06251
Work Shop Code: WSC 00000
4 Faults Found:
16684 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
P0300 - 35-00 - -
16688 - Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected
P0304 - 35-00 - -
16686 - Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected
P0302 - 35-00 - -
16685 - Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected
P0301 - 35-00 - -
So, the incomplete ECU coding fault code went away, which is good, but the cylinder misfires are still there. I doubt that all 4 ignition coils went bad all the sudden. The guy who replaced my turbo and oil pump also put in new spark plugs, maybe those could cause the problem? I haven't looked at them yet, I can do that to figure out what kind they are and if they're maybe not the right kind. Also, I clicked on the Readiness button in vag-com and the following parts show up as "Failed or Incomplete":
Oxygen Sensor(s)
Evaporative Emissions
Catalytic Converter(s)
I did notice a strong gasoline smell while driving my car around with the air blowing (with AC bothon and off). Any idea what could cause that? Bad O2 sensor maybe? Let me know what I should do now. Thanks again for the help!

Bump
Checked the spark plugs and they're Bosch, those were the new ones that the repair shop put in. They smell like gas, not sure if that's bad, and look a bit dirty. I noticed most people recommend NGK. Which model would be good for my car? It's not chipped. I didn't have the idle problem until after the new turbo and new spark plugs were put in by the shop, so I'm very suspicious of the spark plugs now. I'm thinking about cleaning the throttle body as well. Just gotta check the manual and find it.
