A4 Radio Antenna

RE: A4 Radio Antenna
My radio always got great reception but I replaced it with an alpine unit anyways which gets slightly better reception... My guess is the problem is with the booster not the antena...

A4 Cabrio Radio Reception
I don't think the blanket statement "Bose terrible reception" is accurate. On my 2005, the radio worked fine for a long time. Then one day whenever cycling the power top, there was a point in the cycle it would cut out. I never related this to anything until one of you said the antenna is in the rear window. Makes perfect sense if the antenna wire flexes with each top cycle, it probably just broke one day.
Also makes no sense to pull the radio or replace it with an aftermarket unit. The new radio won't work any better with a bad antenna connection.
I'm now going to go digging into where it flexes at the window and either splice it or see if the lead can be replaced.

Found it
On my 2005 Cabbie, the antennae are built into the trunk lid. Then upon further examination the cable was broken inside the harness on the left lower corner of the lid.
THere is a guy on Youtube that has a video on this. It was fairly easy to see where the break was once I took all the cables out of the boot. The cable flexes really easily where it's broken with no center conductor support.
I ended up just splicing the cable and probably lost a few DB of signal but it works well again and I sure didn't want to go through hours of work stringing a new cable all the way to the radio. No wonder the dealership gets so much money to fix this problem.

Antenna Woes
Before you go chasing the antenna in the rear window, take a close look at your trunk lid's wiring harness. There are all sorts of antenna connections under the cover and in my case with the same symptoms as yours, the problem was in the harness that has to bend each time the trunk lid is opened or closed. From what I've read, it's a COMMON problem with the A4.
