Default B6 Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor

VAG-COM says my Coolant temperature sensor needs replacing. I was wondering if anyone knew A) Which sensor it is (green 4 pin or black 2 pin) and B) where it is located in engine compartment? I would guess it's somewhere attached to the radiator or the coolant resovoir?

help!

Is the gauge acting erratic or the car overheating? Anyways here... http://www.audiworld.com/tech/eng66.shtml

thank you thank you thank you!

no, the gauge is fine, the car is just fine. it popped the check engine light a few months ago and i ignored it. took my car into audi to get the oil sludge problem taken care of and they told me the check engine light was on due to the temperature sensor which reminded me that i needed to replace it.

its like, 3 dollars from rockauto.com and audi wanted 500 dollars to replace it. talk about a load of BS lol

For future reference, I think admins should sticky that link, because were it not for that writeup i would have never been able to do this job. You really cannot see a thing, this job is done completely by feel. Getting the new clip on was pure luck. Your hands just dont fit between the firewall and the engine. On my B6 the clip's tab was facing the engine...so there was NO way to get it off except to push on one of the back legs with a small piece of metal. Still, a half hour of hand and knuckle pain is better then 1.5 hours at the shop (what they quoted me) @ 80 bucks an hour

Also just to let you all know, another member emailed me about the clip that holds the sensor in. The grab tab on his was also facing the engine......and there is no way to reinstall it this way. However it goes on both ways, so just install the new one facing the firewall and it works just as well.
