Default cat converter 02 sensor

Hello audi owners around the world. I have a 1996 audi a4 2.8 quatt, I know I cant really make it any faster or anything, Im kind of going for a more luxurious look instead of a racer look...anyways, I have a problem. My car is not accelerating like it should, it rattles under the engine and the check engine light is on. Im leaning towards the idea that it probably needs an 02 sensor, I dont want to take the car to the dealership b/c there is only 1 n my city really that does work on audis... and lets just say... they arent... cheap... I need help to know which sensor to replace and where to find it. By the way, I just got the car and I dont have a bunch of money right now! Any help would be F'n fantastic b/c if I need to drive fast, and If i cant fix it myself Im going to sell it to my dad and get a grand prix gtp...seriously

If its a rattle - sounds like marbles in a coffe can - the your CAT is out and most likely and your O2 sesor is working. also whenever you say that you have a CEL get the codes and post them here - we can help you a lot more if we know what codes are being kicked out.

^^ totally agree the CEL could mean anything and I think in the US you use autozone for free readings ( nothing like that in the UK )

not necessarily the rattle could be a loose heat shield which is common, you need to get under there and have some one accelerate so you can pin point the rattle ( if its from inside the cat ) then its bad

the early 2.8 UK version didn't have the cat ( pre 1992 ) but the pipe fits very well but you need to leave the O2 sensors in the line other wise clean all the crap out of the cat which is basically the same as a test pipe then see how it goes
