Default engine temp gauge not working.

I got my clutch replaced not long ago, when I go my car back there were many things wrong with the car that the mechanic doesn't want to take credit for. I would hire a lawyer but I can't afford one, nor do I have any proof.

My temp gauge doesn't work at all. Everything else is fine. I know the disconnected my coolant tank, not sure what else he did.. but could tilting it cause air to seep in? How do I bleed the system on an 01 1.8t? I searched around and it may be the sensor, how do I check/replace it? Is there anything I can do/check before spending money? Thanks!

i can almost gaurentee the ECt sensor is bad, its the one that sends temp reading to the gauge, its located on teh back of the engine, it costs about $25 from ecs tuning, probably cheaper at the local auto store, takes about 5 minutes to change ont eh 1.8t.

So I guess I can stop praying to the money Gods now?

Is there a way I can check if its bad.. (crazy question.. I know).. I'll buy one soon and replace it. Is it pretty easy once I see what it looks like and check the back of my engine, should I know exactly what to do.. directions?

Thank you SAudi!

this should work for you, its for a B6 but the engine is the same with most components int eh same location, i have a 2.8 and it was buried under a buch of stuff. there really isnt a way to test it (as far as i know) but this is usally the cheapest thing to replace so it couldnt hurt, for me it was defiently the problem since the second i replaced it the temp guage went from cold to halfway warm.(i replaced it right after i drove it so it was still warm). hope this helps

diagnostic tools required

Checking heat outputChecking heat output
Special tools, testers and other items required

â—†Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051 (or fault reader V.A.G 1551/vehicle system tester V.A.G 1552 with wire V.A.G 1551/3) and adapter VAS 6017 (if several vehicle systems are to be tested)
â—†Minitester V.A.G 1362 (for temperature measurement) [/ul]
Test requirements:

â—Engine warm
â—All air ducts, covers and seals OK and properly fitted
â—Air throughput through dust and pollen filter not impaired by contamination
â—Vehicle not exposed to sunlight
â—Fault memory interrogated => Page 01-104 [/ul]

â—Encoding checked and corrected if necessary => Page 01-114
â—Basic setting performed => Page 01-99
â—All dash panel vents open
â—Bonnet closed [/ul]
Note:
If one of these test requirements is not met, interrogate fault memory => Page 01-85.
Checking maximum specified temperature setting

‒Close doors, windows and sun roof.
‒Open all dash panel vents.
‒Start engine.
‒Start heating system self-diagnosis => Page 01-9. [/ul]

‒→ Set temperature preselection "1/3" (approx. 4 bars -A- for driver's and front passenger's side) on -E87 (heating).
‒Set air exit direction on -E87 (heating) to "Dash panel and footwell vents".
‒In "Reading measured value block" function => Page 01-140.
‒Set engine speed to 2000 rpm.
‒Set fresh-air blower speed by way of operating and display unit for air conditioner/Climatronic -E87 (heating) to 2/3 of maximum speed. [/ul]

‒→ Compare measured value (for sender -G89) displayed in zone "2" of display group "010" with measured values in display group "009" zones "1" to "4" (senders -G150, -G151, -G261 and -G262) to values for temperature range shown on graph. [/ul]
Note:
Tolerance band approx. ± 5 °C

A -Vent temperature [/ul]

→ B -Specified vent temperature at 2/3 of maximum temperature setting
C -Specified vent temperature at 1/3 of maximum temperature setting
D -Ambient temperature [/ul]
Example: At 1/3 of max. specified vent temperature (measured values of senders -G150, -G151, -G261, -G262)

Ambient temperature in °C (measured value of -G89)

Specified vent temperature in °C

approx. 0

approx. 26

Notes:

â—†If required values are not attained, compare measured values indicated in display group "009" zones "1, 2, 3" and "4":

‒If measured values in display zones "1" and "3" or "2" and "4" are OK, check temperature flap control motor for side on which measured value is not OK (-V158 or -V159). To do so, perform electrical check on temperature flap control motors (-V158 or -V159)
=> Page 01-247 "Electrical Check, Test Step 4".
‒Check senders -G150, -G151, -G261 and -G262 for proper installation and electrical connections for contact resistance => Page 01-247 "Electrical Check, Test Step 4". Replace any defective components.
‒Check operation of levers between control motors and flaps
=> Page 80-57. [/ul]
â—†Temperature of air flow from "Centre" dash panel vents can also be measured using Minitester V.A.G 1362, for example.
â—†Respective temperatures for left/right side can be synchronised by simultaneously pressing buttons "+" and "-" for temperature preselection on operating and display unit for air conditioner/Climatronic -E87 (heating). [/ul]
