Default Front Lower control arms and tie rods?

Hey guys,
So I go my 18s put on today and they look sweet. However when the mechanic put it on he showed me the huge play in my front tires and said I need to change my front lower control arms and tie rods ASAP. I went to 2 shops and both quoted me 1300 bucks (800 parts + 80 alignment + labor)

My question is I see these control arm kits on ebay for cheap, has anyone used them? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/AUDI-...spagenameZWDVW

I am REALLY low on cash right now and did not anticipate having to spend this so want to know if you guys think these will do the job for now?

Also, I saw there might be some recalls for lower control arms for 1997 quattros? Any idea will the dealer fix it for free?

Thanks,
Quasar

audi had a recall on the lower control arms. if you call the dealer and give them your vin, they can tell you if your car is in for a recall or not.
btw, how did the mechanic check for the play on your steering? did he just lift the car up and move the wheels back and forth?

Hey Buddy
I read about the recalls when I did a search and called the dealers right after i made this post. FORTUNATELY, they said I had one recall open on my car and it was for lower control arms! Got an appointment tomorrow!

Ya my mechanic had the car up on the lift while he was putting my new rims on. THere was a good 3-4 inches of play which he said directly came from the tie rods so we were going to replace that. Then he checked the lower control arms and they were worn too!!

Any chance you think tie rods maybe fine and he was seeing play jus from control arms?

thanks.

Read about changing your TIE ROD ENDS (never done it but I hear it's easy). If I were you I would try that first. Also, take your car to the dealer for that recall...I did the exact same thing and mine turned out to be fine. Good luck.
