Hi everyone!
I need some help with my getting oil issues resolved with my 2010 Audi A4. I purchased the car in April 2015 with 83,000+ miles. Since then it has consumed oil like nobody's business. I have taken it to the Audi dealership and complained of the issue at least twice but was never informed of the issue with excessive oil consumption.
Last Monday I went out to start my car for work and a big cloud of smoke came out of the tailpipe, so I had it towed to the dealership. I was informed on Wednesday that the tensioner needed to be repaired and was given an estimate of $3100 and promised a rental car. According to the dealer the car had the first stage of repairs done back in 2013 at 58K miles, but no other records could be found for any follow up service.
On Saturday I went into the dealership because I still had not heard anything more about the rental car. As soon as I walk into the showroom the guy tells us he was just about to call us because the cam 'fell apart' when the technician began working on it again, which obviously is going to add to the already staggering cost of repairs.
Audi is not owning up to these flaws and has essentially told me that I'm out of luck and on the hook for the cost of all the repairs minus the diagnostic.
What recourse do I have and has anyone had a similar experience?

No experience here as my car had already been fixed / worked on under warranty before I bought it. However I've been reading a lot about it.

Basically:

Audi has 3 steps to fix this problem. Step 1 is cheap and usually doesn't fix it. Step 2 is pricey and replaced the piston/rings. Step 3 - is extensive and something ridiculous like replacing the engine.

Thanks for the information, Sheldon. I've been doing some research on the oil consumption problems too. The dealer that I'm working with here in Houston (I recently moved here) told me that my car went through stage 1 of the repair,s but couldn't find any additional records for completing the other stages. I feel like if Audi started the repairs and I've complained about the oil consumption, then it should be their responsibility to complete the repairs and not pass along that responsibility to their customers.

This is my first Audi and will be my last.

 

In the thread I posted people recommend contacting AoA (Audi of America). They will usually direct you to a dealership they will work with to resolve the issue. Unfortunately how the dealership system is built in America is different than in Germany and therefore Audi Dealerships have nothing to do with Audi directly in the USA. Some will work with Audi (and therefore AoA) others don't care.
Again contact AoA and see if they can direct you to someone who works with Audi to resolve your issue.
The flaw is within the design and I agree that Audi needs to fix it - from what I read they will but not every dealership cares (and there is nothing Audi can do in that case).

 

I would look at getting a good low mileage motor from a breakers if you get no joy from Audi and your paying yourself, it will be much cheaper, then just pay a good indie garage that specialises in German cars to fit it, just make sure it's the same year or near yours with the same spec so you won't have any compatibility Issues!
Sorry about your engine, cam snapped?? How is that not a manufacturing issue but at the age of the car they may just say sorry it's out of warranty, if that's the case please don't pay Audi to repair it, it will cost stupid money, look on la dismantler website for an idea on engine cost, get a warranty also when you buy one ok, hope it goes well!

 

Update!
Audi basically said take a walk because the car is out of warranty. It's really a bad situation since I just bought this car last year and already sank $1900 into it for a tensioner and other work prior to this.
Anyway, thanks Noz1974 for the advice, because I no choice now but to purchase a new engine. But you're right, I won't be letting Audi do the work. I'll find a reputable indie to do the work.

 

What is a breaker and any suggestions on where to find a reputable one?

A breaker is a salvage (junk) yard that sells used auto parts. You can find low mileage engines for much less than a new one.

 

Yes a breaker , junk yard or dismantler, basically you should be able to buy an engine from a car that has say has been wrecked at the rear leaving the engine and front ok
Try to buy one with a guarantee and complete with all ancilliariea i.e starter motor alternator ac unit etc
This way the shop you choose for the work can just take delivery of the engine, pull the old one and in with the replacement, just make sure it's the same model as yours and is compatible but they will help you with this ok
