Default Rubbing noise from steering wheel.

Hi,

I've recently noticed a rubbing noise coming from the steering wheel. Doesn't sound like anything to serious but is very annoying. Sounds like plastic rubbing somewhere near the top of the column. also getting a creaking noise when I turn the wheel slowly. However, this only lasts for about 10 degress in each direction.

Anybody got any ideas on this?

Regards

You could have the dreaded steering column spring creak if it sounds like its coming from inside the steering wheel itself.
The column has a couple springs in it - expensive as hell to change a $5 part. Try tilting the wheel a little, or telescoping it a little to get rid of the noise. Some have lived with it by doing that.

I also have the 10 degrees of squeek and I was told there's also a bushing in the steering column that can rub and cause this noise but that was from an Audi mechanic and I generally don't trust their diagnosis until it's confirmed here. Springs sounds more likely to me anyway, at least I figured a bushing would squeek more than just 10-15 degrees.

My problem has actually progressed. It's weird...

In the morning, after being unused for 12-16 hours, my car will squeek no matter where I turn my wheel; it squeeks AS I'm turning it, then it just vibrates with no squeeks after I stop turning the wheel and just pull out while my wheels are turned...

Seems as if our problems are all related, however some of us have it worse than others.

As said, I'm bringing my car in for service early next week- I'll report back then.

PS- but during the day after being used for the first time, the severity of the squeeks is reduced DRASTICALLY.

Move both the telescoping and tilt back and forth a few times while turning the wheel. That often fixes the problem
