01' A6 2.7T oil temperature question
Good Afteroon, all:
Got a question about the normal oil temperature operating range for an 01 A6 2.7T. Granted, it's been butt-cold here in New Jersey the past few days (since I've owned the car), but no matter how much I drive, the temperature gauge doesn't get more than a hair above the 150-degree mark (the bottom of the gauge). I talked to the dealer about it; they said that it's normal for it to run low like that in the winter. I think he's feeding me a line of BS so they don't have to look at it; my hunch is that the temperature sending unit is not behaving correctly. But before I call him on it, I'd like to know if that really is normal for this time of year. The water temperature gauge sits right in the middle of the scale after about 10-15 minutes of running time.
So.....is this normal? And if not, what is the normal winter operating temperature (highway driving, not flogging on it).
Thanks!

RE: 01' A6 2.7T oil temperature question
Cold or hot outside, once the car is warmed up it generally runs right around 200o. Once, during some relatively high speed driving for 180 milesback from Detroit at ~90mph, it ran just over 225o.
My water temperature always sits right on the center line at twelve o'clock.

RE: 01' A6 2.7T oil temperature question
The normal operating range of the 2.7L oil temp is 200-225 degrees under 70 degree ambient temperatures. For every 10 degrees the ambient air drops the oil temp should decrease 6-8 degrees. So its a normal condition.

RE: 01' A6 2.7T oil temperature question
Hey all:
Thanks for the knowledge. I'll keep an eye on it once the weather starts getting a little warmer. Worse comes to worse and I have to replace the sending unit, and that doesn't look like too much of an ordeal.

PS: I'm out of Bergen county, NJ BoroKid.

RE: 01' A6 2.7T oil temperature question
Thanks for all of that. It was so useful. My 01' A6 2.7t runs around 200 and it scares me cuz ive never noticed it so high. Its decently cold here in Detroit. My driving is normal, but i have seen it hit around 225 before.
