Default 2000 A6 With A Lot Of Miles...

I currently own a 2008 A4, but my wife has confiscated it and i rarely get to drive it. To satisfy myself i have been looking for a used Audi. I came across a 2000 A6 with a 202k miles on it. The car is only 3k. I came on here to see if there are issues i should be aware of with that many miles? Maybe issues with that year A6? Any input would be awesome...Thanks.

Depends on the engine and trans - what is it?

Read the posts at the top of this forum's A6 section (how you got here) for lots of info on the 2.7t. Auto trans can also be an issue - lots of posts here about that too - can't speak from experience, since mine's a 6-speed...

Cory,
I have a 2002 A6 4.2 we bought a handful of months ago with 135,000 miles. I enjoy working on cars, have access to lots of tools and a two lifts and I have VAG COM on a laptop. If I didn’t have the access to all the goodies, I probably would have truly regretted buying the Audi. By the way, I owned a Lotus Esprit a number of years back and they make the Audi seem reliable!
The reality is that I have had to deal with a lot of problems, some specific to the 4.2 V8, some specific to the previous owner. We enjoy the car, my wife loves it, but she regularly comes home and says “honey the check engine light is on again”. I’m glad I haven’t had to pay for labor that is for sure!

Think about it. A 12-year old car with 202k miles and turbos. Probably paid for. Why would anyone want to sell such a gem??

Read the sarcasm again. Now, factually, that's a boatload of miles and unless you are planning to put $2-3k into repairs, I would run. I have 206k on mine and it has been maintained beyond Audi's recommendations. I've still had to replace clutch/flywheel (cheaper than a tip) and recently the cats. Now my SAIU pump ($700) is CELing.

So unless you get a maintenance history or feel real lucky, I would pass. Pony up some extra money and buy a newer, lower mileage car and hope for the best. There are probably some good deals on A4s coming off of 3-year lease and the payments will be less than the repairs on a 2000 A6.

Or you might indeed get lucky - I paid $2200 for my 2001 2.7t with 216K miles and I've replaced the PS pump, the LCD display, one door lock, the alternator and the starter. Everything else is perfect. It was dealer maintained up to 199K. Not even much wear on the leather inside.

Look closely, maybe have it inspected if you don't trust your own judgement, and make an informed decision. I figure even if mine only lasted a year, that's still less than half the price of a car payment for something not-as-nice (and I've already gotten 8 months out of it...)

That's a lot of miles.. But if u decide to buy it try not to pay more than $2K for it.
