Default 2000 a6 2.7t camshaft reinstall

What is the easiest way to re-einstall the camshafts on a 2000 audi a6 2.7t?

Also, is it correct that there are supposed to be 16 cam chain rollers between the camshaft marks on the passenger side and 15 1/2 on the drivers side? If so how in the world do you measure 15 1/2

Thanks.

Well the correct way would have been to set the car to TDC, then marking the cams with the chain. If you didn't have the engine at TDC and you removed both cams you might be screwed. Because if you didnt have the engine at TDC you have no idea where the cams are supposed to be positioned in relation to where the valves are. If you do have the engine at TDC that is correct with counting the 16 & 15 1/2 links. You line up the marks on the first cam cap with the slots on the cams and count 16 links. The exhaust cam mark will be slightly inward. Just make sure you count about 16 on each side. The drivers side will be not quite 16 but it should be close. Then rotate then engine by hand a few times make sure there is no stress or anything then recount the links and make sure there are still 16 and you are good to go.

Thank you for your post.

I was at TDC and the Crankshaft Locking Pin was installed prior to removing the camshafts. Before removing the passenger camshafts the camshaft marks were in alignment. I haven't removed the drivers side yet as I am doing one at a time.

I did mark the chain, but apparently not well enough as I am struggling to get in reinstalled. Should I be counting the cam chain bars before inserting the tensioner?

Thanks again.

Kevin
