Default 2000 A6 2.8L Hard Starting Problems, and now won't start - maybe starter problem??

I am new as a registered member of the forums, but I have had 2 Audis and 2 VW Passats in the last 10 years, and I have been through these forums countless times. You guys know your stuff and that is why I'm here, I'm stuck! I have a 2000 Audi A6 Avant 2.8L, 150k miles.

This has been a slowly evolving problem with my car. Almost 9 months ago, I started having a hard start problem. It might take 10 secs of turning the engine over to start up. After reading these forums, I decided it was a fuel filter issue, so I replaced it. Problem went away for a while and my engine definitely had more get up an go. In the last week or so, the hard start issue returned, but hasn't been too bad until Tuesday morning.

In addition, on my way home from the store, the car started surging only during acceleration. From a stop, or while cruising, whenever I gave the car some gas, it jerked in accordance with my speed (slowly at low speeds, and more frequently at high speeds). On that trip, I started to go up a slight hill, which I have taken countless times, and the car completely died and hasn't been able to start again since. I think the two issues are related.

I have a vagcom (best purchase I have ever made), and I got a few engine codes among others, but no CEL light or OBDII codes. The full scan on Tuesday night is below. Since I saw that the camshaft position sensor was listed, I went ahead and replaced it. But the car still won't start and it isn't throwing any codes now.

I'm fairly mechanical but haven't done any major type of repairs on my own. Any help or guidance is appreciated!

Just to follow up to my previous post, I have done some maintenance since I bought the car 19 months ago. plugs, fuel filter, air filter, regular oil changes, ran some seafoam in the intake about 6 weeks ago.

This week I have replaced a camshaft position sensor. Tomorrow morning, i'm going to start by checking on the fuel pump, fuel pressure, and some electrical testing. I also know that some vacuum lines are cracked, so I am going to start replacing the ones I can see that are cracked or broken.

Is there anything else I need to check?

Ok - another update. Some of my vacuum lines have broken, so I am replacing them. The camshaft breather hoses are a pain, but I'm going to do those next. Will vacuum hoses stop the car from starting?

I have also checked the fuel pump. I'm getting 10v while cranking and 1v while the ignition is on. I didn't hear anything from the pump. What is the best way to test if the fuel pressure is ok?

I had to stop for now because of snow. BTW - this is my daily commuter car, so time is a bit tight to get this fixed before Monday.

Thanks!

I would think that it is your o2 sensor(s) that is(are) going bad.

Since stalling going up the hill it has never started since?

Is the timing belt intact?

It started surging while accelerating, even slowly acceleration, then while going up a slight incline, it stopped and it hasn't started again. I don't know if the incline caused any issue, or if it is a coincidence.

The timing belt looks fine. I haven't replaced it since I've owned the car and it is probably due, but since that doesn't seem to be the immediate issue, I'm starting with what might be the cause. I'll circle back and replace the timing belt sooner than later.

I considered the O2 sensor issue, but that wouldn't cause the car to not start, it would just cause poor performance. Right?

After checking the voltage of the fuel pump, I unscrewed one of the fuel lines in the engine compartment and looked for any fuel while cranking the engine. and found none . So I figured that since I have voltage at the pump with no fuel pressure, the relay isn't the issue, so I purchased a fuel pump from Napa ($175+tax) and am in the process of installing it.

The current issue I'm running into is that the pump and cover are attached by two wires (black and yellow) and one hose. The other side of the cover where I need to attach the return hose is open with no nib on it to attach the hose. Do I need to transplant a copper nib from the old unit? They are really tight and copper so I'm trying to get it out without damaging it. Any tricks?

The fuel pump does make sense. I read your 1st post too quickly. Personally I have not replaced my pump yet, and hope never to have to so I will be of no assistance (not like my 1st post was either). Auditech is a good resource if you can track him down.

Good news! After replacing the fuel pump, I got gas to the engine compartment and the car actual ran! So many, many thanks to this forum and to those who have gone before me. Your previous posts helped tremendously!

As a side note, make sure you specify which drivetrain you have to the part store. FWD and Quattro have two different gas tank covers. The Quattro needs the hose connections to be at an angle to fit. The FWD one is straight down and doesn't fit the Quattro. I have to return the wrong one that Napa sold me.

But I'm fairly happy. The engine didn't run smoothly because the intake was taken half apart since I'm replacing the vacuum lines. I felt that since I'm that far I might as well do a throttle body cleaning too. So I'll report back once all is done. Hopefully by this weekend.

Thanks again.

You guys WON'T BELIEVE THIS!! I finally got all the vacuum lines replaced, cleaned the throttle body and related intake parts. Got everything put back together, and went to start the car, and I heard a clunk and now the engine won't turn over.

It sounds like the starter motor is turning but the engine isn't. I also started smelling something getting hot. I have a feeling that the starter stopped engaging the motor.

Is the starter solenoid part of that or is a gear messed up? I'm thinking about calling around on Monday to machine shops and see if they can repair it, rather than replacing the entire thing. I can probably get a new one for around $200, but maybe it can be repaired for $80-100.

Any thoughts?

how tough was the fuel pump swap? I have a 99 a6 quattro and I think I'm going to need a new one. did you has to drop the tank or is there an access port in the floor pan?
