Unhappy 2003 A6 4.2 Quattro Horror Story

Bear with me. This has lots of issues.

Fuel Tank Leak

I was having rear brakes done at shop and was called about leaking gas from fuel tank. Went an looked and drip drip drip from driver side front of tank.
Did online search and came up with recall for cracked nipple on rollover valve
:Recall ID # 66688 - FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY Plus
Recall Date: MAY 03, 2011 Model Affected: 2003 Audi A6.

So I called Audi and they said my vehicle was not effected. I questioned that since model etc fit parameters. I was then told it was never recalled or it was fixed. I said I owned the vehicle at the time of the recall and NEVER got a recall notice. They then told me (after much hassling) to contact the dealer in Ann Arbor MI. I did and they said they fixed it in 2011. I had the car in for a headlight repair and the dealer said they did it then. I told them they never told me anything about it and asked for a copy of the work order. The work order shows it but I don't recall it on the work order at the time. I ran a CarFax on the vehicle and it showed no recall. I asked the dealer to evaluate the leak and take pictures of the repair through the inspection port under the seat. They did not and claimed it was not leaking they saw no evidence of the leak. I told them the tank had drained down and then I drove 30 miles to the dealer. They ran a diagnostic on the car and said they can't verify a leak because the leak detection system is failed and the test returned 14 error codes and even if it was leaking, I would have to pay for a replacement tank @ $3100 since they won't repair it if it is leaking even if leaking from their failed repair.

The 14 codes returned from the dealer listed all sort of shorts etc. including P1572 an d P1576 which were engine mount solenoid valve short to ground (right and left). Those codes are applicable to the bi-turbo which I do not have. I told them to STOP and I was coming to get the car.

I checked the codes on my own reader and got totally different codes.

I had my local shop (not Audi) replace all four oxygen sensors as something caught under the car and pulled one of the o2 sensor wires down and broke it.
That fellow had a bunch of codes but cleared them when I picked up the car.

Second issue:

I was sitting in the car with the engine off and the doors locked. My passenger window was open. My wife reached in an opened the door from the inside and the alarms went off etc. Overhead reading lights stayed on
after I used key to get alarm to stop. lock/unlock rocker switch drivers door did not work. I repeatedly locked/unlocked with remote to get light off and door lock to finally work. The problem of the locking switch and overhead light has occurred about 5 times now.

I have order the RossTech diagnostic software and read cable to try and resolve all these issues.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Best regards

Hi

Out of curiosity, have you cleared all the codes and seen what comes back?

I cleared the codes in my OBDII reader and they all came back. Different codes than from the dealer. By the way I guess my vehicle does have hydraulic motor mounts. I thought it was bi-turbo.

I have ordered the Ross-Tech program/hardware (Audi dealer seems to be using same thing per error report). I will see if I can duplicate dealers error codes.

Ok, my two pieces on this

1) MAF Sensor code needs a review. Pull out the sensor and soak it in a bad of rubbing alchohal for an hour or so. Let dry and reinsert. Clear codes and see if it comes back. If the code for the maf comes back, replace it.

2) Check your vac lines, worth the time, might as well redo them if they've not been done.

Out of curiosity, how is the transmission shifting?

Transmission shifts fine. No problem with that. Car also runs fine. No physical indication of any problems.
I will try cleaning the MAF today.

Thanks

I have not got around to the MAF today. Was looking at pics in Bentley and can't quite
understand what I am dealing with. Some pics looked like a small flanged p;iece that was inserted into the flow path. Pictures of the MAF sensor from Bosh looked like a much larger
short cylindrical tube that is part of the flow path. Looks like different things for different engines.
What does the actual part you are suggesting cleaning look like?

Best regards

Thanks. That explained away my concern. I read you should always replace o-ring. Found only one place: $5 for the o-ring and $23 shipping.Forget that. I will reuse.

I have a audi a6 3.0 . check to see if you have a door showing open on your dash. that will be your problem. you will need to replace the door latch assembly for that door. There are youtube videos about it. As far as the gas tank. Audi did the same and told me its not listed. I took the car to my mechanic .In order to find the leak my mechanic first replace the purge valve and gas cap. codes came back after 600 miles. He then did a smoke test and found the leak was coming form the tank. He had to drop the whole rear because of the quattro. He had a used replacement tank handy. And he found the crack on a nipple. it was barely noticeable. All that work cost me $700.

Hi:

Thanks. No door ajar. Interesting about the tank. You are very lucky. I found one in Toronto for $150 but the fellow never answered my inquiry about shipping.

I don't understand how Audi can say they fixed it once and if their fix failed they are not responsible. This is insane. The NTSB/Traffic Safety should kick their rears.
