2003 A6 4.2 Quattro Timing Belt Replacement
Hello,
First, thank you to the forum and users. I've been able to get some quality information as I've set out to do the typical timing belt replacement and all other related items.
I have a few questions:
1. Initially, I thought the timing mark was the white line on the harmonic balancer but when I placed the cover (with timing mark) it became apparent the real mark is the line cut into the balancer. Is that correct?
2. I expected to see the camshaft "wings" perfectly in-line from one another to aid in connecting the camshaft lock tool but I see the passenger side is a little off. It would appear the timing is off at least a tooth. Is that a correct assumption?
3. The belt is extremely loose at the top, certainly not enough tension to drive the water pump (which is the primary reason for beginning this work), at it appears the hydraulic tensioner shaft is not extended at all (with pin out it is fully enclosed in the housing). Is that a symptom of tensioner failure?
Also, any recommendations on parts supplier? Need the proper tools, belts, tensioners, rollers, water pump, and gaskets.
Pictures attached.
Thank You!

You can buy the complete timing belt kits from different sites. I bought mine from ECStuning, others have bought it from Blauparts. Some complained about premature failing waterpumps or tensioners with these kits but I guess it's like buying a lemon - you never know even with OEM.
Most of these sites also offer the tools you need, so pick a place you like and get a "good" kit + tools and have fun doing an 8h-10h job :P
