Thumbs down A6 4.2 reverse gear gone

How much do you think it would cost to repair the transmission on the 4.2 with no reverse gear? [all other gears work fine]

Thanks,

Sorry is right.

low trans fluid leads to chewing up the reverse gear first.

I hear they get around $5,000.00 to rebuild.

However if your real good at puzzles I bet you can rebuild it yourself for less then $1000.00

There are 4 ZF Distributors in Ohio you could call and ask how much would cost you, or at least how much would cost a repair kit if you can DIY.
1. Cincinnati - Transtar, 800-543-2723
2. Cincinnati - Whatever It Takes, 513-942-1300
3. Massillon - Green Leaf, 330-832-6001
4. Walton Hills - Transtar, 800-321-8830

I think finding a repair kit is not the major problem.
Having a place out of the cold and the right tools (e.g. transmission jack and engine crane) is the main concern.

There's this old thread I just remembered about, by someone who overhauled his transmission...and coincidentaly it was about a... 4.2 enigne
I see he bought the kit from Transtar Industries, so from a ZF distrubuter.
The parts of your ZF transmission are dirt cheap $550 bucks total for the whole rebuild kit.
. It's obvious that the distributer route/approach is your best bet.
Things start looking "bright" for you, since you have mechanics in the family.
Good luck.

I'd exercise caution in regard of the outcome of the rebuild in that thread.
Looks like the results were not as described/expected and/or short lived.

You better dig deeper.

Start with verification/change of the ATF level.

Then get ready to become an expert in transmission drops and inns.
The book labor is 17h.
Post your results here.

Taking that transmission on is very difficult.

A) It is a very heavy transmission.
B) You need to have mechanical experience to get this one done.
C) You will need a clean area to do the work in.
D) Have the nuts to purchase everything you need regardless of your financial situation.
E) The only way to test your work is to hump it back into the car. (YIKES)

That being said, I'd do it.

If you decide to take it on, post your trans model number.
