A6 Allroad Auto - Gearbox
Hi Everyone,
Just purchased a 2003 A6 Allroad 2.5 TDI Automatic (Tiptronic). And thought I would join the Audi Forum.
I love the car, it has full service history and has 77k on the clock.
The only thing I have noticed, after owning it for a little over a week is that sometimes when driving or starting up, rather than highlighting the selected gear, PRNDS is fully highlighted on the dashboard and the car appears to have engaged a middle range gear. Not ideal when setting off at junctions etc...
If I pull up and turn off the ignition, then re-start the car this clears and I am able to drive normally.
Any ideas on this from you most knowledgeable guys.... ? Please don't advise it's going to cost me big bucks....
Many thanks indeed.

It's going into Limp Mode, I personally have not had this issue before so my knowledge is limited. I suggest find someone or get yourself a copy of vag-com and see what's going on.
Good luck and welcome to the forums. When you say 77k is that miles or kilometers?

Sounds like the transmission is going into limp-mode, which you would see in the cluster: gear selector LCD window is in reverse video (white letters on black background). Solenoid replacement is a common fix, for some shifting problems, but there are many non-solenoid problems too. VAG-COM/VCDS will pull the code and give you a better idea of what the problem is. With luck, there will be someone local who is willing to help you scan it.

I have a slightly similar problem (the reverse lights on the dash have only occurred yesterday once) with missed gear changes.
My wife told me that when she was driving yesterday, all the auto transmission lights on the dashboard were on, she couldn't even change gear manually and it seemed to be stuck in a single gear but she couldn't tell which. On the way back it was fine again! I drove it this morning and had little problem. A couple of times the auto box changed down for a hill with a bit of a thump and then revved somewhat when changing back up but this was only in the first couple of miles.
I checked for any codes when I got back and did find one this time, a new one: 17119. This code is not listed my Vagscanner manual but searching the web it seems to be the following:
17119/P0735/001845 - Gear 5: Incorrect Ratio
Possible Symptoms
Possible Causes
This would make sense and is probably a connections fault but how do I find where that would be?
There is no doubt whatever this problem is it is totally temperature dependent. During the warm weather it does not appear and when colder it only appear when the engine is cold, drive a few miles and the problem usually goes away. I have had auto specialists look at it as well as the local mechanics and all are baffled. Does anyone have any ideas?

- Clutch Slipping
- Reduced Power Output
Possible Causes
- Gear related Clutch slipping/faulty
- Gear related Solenoid Valve dirty/faulty
- Overloaded Clutch due to continuous high Torque or Tuning
- Wiring and/or Connections faulty
- Sensor Gear Position Indicator faulty
- Mechanical Failure
