Audi A6 2.7t Oil Capacity ???????????????????
#21
I read up on what bobistheoilguy dot com says. I'm convinced and will see what my current oil pressure is. If I can go lower I'm thinking Red Line 5W20 (he says its a thick 20 grade oil, he recommends it as one of the best synthetic 30 grade oils) for my next change.
Anyone know how I can read the oil pressure at various rpms, with vag-com perhaps?
Also, what is the oil pressure relief point on the 2.7T APB engine, where can I find that info?

well, I really think that bob had a good point. If I can check my oil pressure and if its relatively high for the 10psi per 1000rpm figure then I can safely use the redline 5w-20 which is supposedly almost like 5w-30... I know that it sounds and looks crazy, but if the oil pressure is too high, I want it closer to 10psi per 1000rpm...

the 0w-30 says:
For use where 5W30 is recommended, especially in colder environments
Suitable for VW/Audi 503.00 and 503.01, as well as Mercedes Benz 229.3 and 229.5
Better flow at extremely cold temperatures compared to 5W30 and 10W30
Recommended for API SN/SM/SL/SJ/SH/SG/CF and ACEA A5/B5

There are two main categories of oil from your perspective; oils which meet 502.00, and those that don't. Within the 502.00 classification, only the following four oil grades qualify:
- 0W-30 Castrol Syntech (aka German Castrol, an oil which will most likely become unavailable in the near future)
- 0W-40 Mobil 1
- 5W-30 (typically not available in the U.S.)
- 5W-40 (the most commonly available 502.00 oil in the U.S.; made by a number of manufacturers).

did you read what it says on bobistheoilguy . com ??? thinner oil flows more, creating more lubrication and cooling. In the owners manual it specifys SJ 0w-30, which is an OLD classification, the new oils are SM and SN which is MUCH MUCH better! Ow-40 is what everyone suggested on the audi forum sites but perhaps its just not the right oil to be using if your pressure is too high, I still didn't check my pressure, I gotta find out how with vag-com or I would have to put a pressure guage somewhere... I'm definitely going to check before my next oil change and adjust my oil accordingly. If my pressure is currently close to 10psi per 1000rpm then I have no choice but to continue using 0w-40, but if its higher like say 15+psi per 1000rpm then I'm going down to at leas 0w-30

With the above in mind, I sent a letter to AOA and asked them about the correct oil for a W8 Passat I used to frequently service. The reason for the inquiry was the fact that the 503.xx oil specifications (which the W8 required) had been retired; their response (which I can look up and forward to you if you wish) indicated that oil meeting the 502.00 oil specification has superseded 503.xx and is now the correct oil for the W8 and for a number of other engines (one of which I believe was the 2.7T).
Long story short, it's your money and your car, if you choose to run 0W-20 in it, there's nothing any of us can do to dissuade you from your choice. Just be advised; your engine was NOT designed to run with oil anywhere near that light. Remember, "cooling and lubrication" are only two of the many functions oil provides for your engine, and 0W-20 is simply the wrong oil for your application.

in the owners manual it clearly says 0w-30, so according to bob 0w-20 is around 10% thinner... Ok fine I wont jump the gun and go straight to 0w-20 but it clearly says 0w-30 in my book. So fine, I'll find a 502 whatever oil that is 0w-30 and try it IF my oil pressure is well above 10psi per 1000rpm... IF the pressure is really close to 10psi per 1000rpm I'll stick to the mobil 1 0w-40, or maybe i'll try another brand just to check it out...
