Diggin' this site! Need ur opinions bad...
I just got my 01 A6 2.7T and love it, and it's the wife that got me into Audi's. She has the little 97 Cabriolet with 145k on it (it's not in great condition) and there is another A6 2.7T in town that we drove and like. It's a dark green 2002 with 74k miles and the guy will take her car and $7k (hers isn't worth much)...
So the question for you Audi guru's is...is it a bad idea to have two 2.7Turbo cars? Would we better off with a 2.8 or 3.0 for her? Or give her my A6 and get an S4 for me? Thanks in advance for your opinions!

I can afford repairs/upkeep to a certain extent, but the thought of the possibility of both cars needing A LOT at the same time isn't comforting.

Two 2.7Ts with 6+ years on the calendar and 70k+ miles is just asking to spend significant time in the shop. Perhaps you should look for a younger 2.7 T for the wife, or a even brand new 4.2. At least that way only one of the Audis is in the "exasperating zone"

I would get a 4.2. Not necessarily a new one. The only decision would be which one you or the wife would drive. My wife likes them both so she drives whatever is there. She has a BMW, which is useless in the snow.

An 11-year old A4 with 145k sounds like a lot more trouble than a 2.7T with half the mileage. Get it checked out well. If it's treated right, there should not be significant problems. Plan on $1200-1500 for the timing belt work around 90k. Consider what a solid, comfortable, great winter car you're getting for...say, $10k net. That should leave a good pile of cash for minor repairs.
I bought mine used at 37k and turned 114k today. Other than an alternator (and the clutch/flywheel that I think was due to the prior owner towing a trailer and then me chipping it), it's been a very reliable car. I keep asking my indie about shocks and suspension and he states they are in fine shape. All the electronics work. Ahh - just remembered - the passenger seat heater works erratically.
