Arrow should i do it?

hi all. im new to this forum.as you can tell.
so i got tired of my old vw passat and nissan and sold them both.
now i am leaning on a 98-01 audi a6 2.8
specifically the 2.8 because i dont really need the turbo.
and the turbo would be some extra money on repairs that i dont have at the moment.

what do you all think about this car?
is it a solid car? is it a troublesome car that causes headaches
and many trips to mechanics?
i know to look for timing belt and water pump replacement after anything with 100k on it.

just would like some personal tips and remarks from audi a6 owners.
because who better to ask than someone that deals with the car every day?

thanks all help is VERY appreciated

I recommend the 3.0 instead of the 2.8. A little more power and totally bullet proof.

is the 3.0 available in years 98-01? if not i may have to wait on it untill its more affordable.
my passat is nothing but problems so im hoping the audi wont be as much of a hassle even though they are practically the same manufacture.

what are the most problems audis have? engine and tranny? are they solid?

my passat is mostly electronic problems and had to have tie rods and controll arms done.
other than that its decent.

and my nissan burned oil like crazy.

01 came with 2.8. 3.0 is more of a bitch to work on than a 2.8.

so the 3.0 is more solid but harder to work on?

i found a 1998 black on black a6 2.8 with 140,000 miles on it for 5 grand.
should i buy it? should i try to get it for a little lower? a little closer to 4k?
or should i pass on this car? im not sure how many miles is too much.

the owner listed replacing the tb and wp but no idea if the car will lemon on me once i drive it for a few weeks and find hidden problems.

this is a tough one... what do you all think?

I had a 98 a5 2.8 with 165000+ miles that ran like a champ. Needed o2 sensors, but it never let me down. sold it to buy an a6.

Sounds like maybe you should look at a Toyota or Honda. All Audi's require maintenance and none of it's cheap.

Don't expect an Audi to require less maintenance than a Passat Expect the opposite... As for $5,000 - way too much -- $2,500 - 3,000 is more like it

hah yeah i looked on bluebook and it was only worth EXACTLY what you just said.

i told the guy and he starts brambling about "this is a quattro its worth more"
lmfao. sorry i just thought it was hallarious. im going to pass on this one and wait for a better one .

and when i had my passat everyone was telling me the same thing
"this car is the same as an audi, its a lemon, it will have alot of problems, this and that,"

so i thought i would ask some actual a6 owners what they REALLY THINK about their cars.

so is it worth buying a a6?

its funny how everybody tries to say the same exact thing you just said.
"if you cant maintain a car buy a honda"

well i know basic maintenance, oil, filters, exc....
that would all be taken care of on time properly.
